State Department's Annual Report Finds Very Few Improvements
In releasing the State Department's annual human rights report on
February 25, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's rhetoric had an
emotional thrust: "Our commitment to human rights is driven by faith in
our moral values, and also by the knowledge that we enhance our own
security, prosperity, and progress when people in other lands emerge
from shadows and shackles to gain the opportunities and rights we enjoy
and treasure."

On February 20, the judge ordered a new probe to identify the killers of
crusading journalist Anna Politkovskaya after what the Moscow press
called the total failure of a three-month trial, Agence France-Press
(AFP) reported. The day earlier, the jury acquitted the four defendants,
none of whom were charged with the murder and were accused only as
accomplices. The prosecution said it will appeal the verdict.
