Get united to take a stand against racism
In 2008 numerous organisations in 47 European Countries joined the
annual European-wide Action Week Against Racism. Thousands of people all
over Europe were united in their fight for a Europe without
discrimination, intolerance, racism and nationalism - promoting
diversity, mutual respect and understanding.
This year again UNITED calls for international participation during the
European-wide Action Week Against Racism (14-22 March 2009)! -

Become active in this years' campaign
Don't worry, good activities don't have to be expensive. Much more
important than money are creativity and engagement. You do not
necessarily have to organise a big demonstration or event, awareness
about the emerging issues of racism and discrimination is already
created when you spread/hang the UNITED campaign material in
universities, schools, your working place or in the streets.
To get some inspiration have a look at the 2008 List for Activities -
http://www.unitedagainstracism.org/pages/act08arw.htm
Give the campaign a European dimension
Inform us about your actions to highlight the issue of racism on
European level. Your activities will be published through the List of
Activities - http://www.unitedagainstracism.org/pages/act09arw.htm -
that creates visibility and attention all over Europe. In this way you
also contribute to create a strong and diverse European-wide campaign.
Don't forget: Even small things can change the world!
Order campaign material for free

** 21 MARCH **
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination takes
place annually on 21 March. This day, in 1960, during a peaceful
demonstration in Sharpeville (South Africa) against the apartheid,
police opened fire and killed 69 people.
Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly of the United Nations
called upon the international community to redouble its efforts to
eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
During the annual European-wide Action Week Against Racism, which takes
place around 21 March, thousands of people fight for tolerance and equal
rights for everybody and celebrate the diversity of Europe.
This year, from 14-22 March, once again hundreds of activities on the
local, national and international level will take place all around
Europe, organised by a wide variety of organisations. Activities range
from intercultural youth festivals over getting racist slogans off the
walls to multicultural football matches.
** VALUE DIVERSITY **
Look deeper, don't judge by what you see - Value diversity!
Population in Europe is becoming more and more diverse. Internal and
external migration processes are making it a place where people of many
different backgrounds share their existence. Nowadays diversity seems to
be considered worrisome rather than a potential growth.
"Diversity is beautiful" - that's true and much more than that it adds
value to society, cohesion and development in any aspect. What we need
to understand is how to manage diversity and not to be afraid of it. The
magic formula is to LOOK DEEPER and VALUE DIVERSITY to recognise what is
beyond the unknown and find out that there is a lot to explore, to
understand and to learn from each other.
We believe in future as a time of communion, when all the people living
in Europe offer their uniqueness to each other as a gift and diversity
is not seen as an obstacle anymore; a future without discrimination and
exclusion, but with a mainstream culture based on intercultural respect,
solidarity and equal rights.
With this goal, we stand UNITED in our struggle to value diversity.
Racism is not a local issue and the European-wide campaign can help to
set the agenda on all levels. We have to campaign on local, regional and
European level to get our point across. By linking local and national
actions, we can generate European-wide publicity. We can show that there
is an enormous amount of people that believe in an intercultural open
society. It gives all participants new energy to go on with their
everyday struggle against racism and intolerance and let people who may
not be aware of it in their daily life reflect about the issues raised.
You will get motivated and inspired by the ideas and enthusiasm of other
people, learn from each other's experience and views, generate more
publicity because of the scope and size of the activity, etc. If you
would like to take part in this campaign, keep in mind that it is the
variety and creativity of many different activities all over Europe that
make the UNITED campaigns unique.
