MRG�s Trouble in Paradise Campaign in support of Kenya�s Endorois
community has been extended until 28th February 2009 after a welcome
show of support from online ethical tourism site responsibletravel.com,
who have boosted petition numbers by encouraging their members to sign
up. We hope to have 450 signatures by the end of the month � help us
meet our target and ask your friends and family to sign our petition at
http://www.minorityrights.org/6775/trouble-in-paradise/add-your-voice.html
to press for a fairer deal from tourism for the Endorois.
MRG will collect all of the signatures together with your comments and
hand the petition over to the Endorois community, the Kenyan government
and tour operators. This petition - and its demonstration of global
solidarity - will provide a vital boost to the Endorois' struggle to
reclaim their ancestral land. Please send any further comments and

Endorois excluded from food aid - Many of you may have heard that 10
million people in Kenya are currently dependent on food aid following
last year�s severe droughts. Meanwhile the Endorois go hungry as local
authorities exclude the community from food handouts -

A show of hands
for communities combating climate change
The UN failed indigenous people once again � crucial international
negotiations ended in December with indigenous demands ignored. We at
MRG aim to keep up the fight to get the Indigenous communities heard and
have them included in future talks on climate change. Join our fight by

signatures but we need more

Humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Sri Lanka � MRG warns

The civilian death toll in Sri Lanka could escalate catastrophically if
safe passage to leave is not immediately provided for an estimated
quarter of a million people trapped in the latest round of fighting,
Minority Rights Group International warns.

Baha'is arrested in Iran; one worked for Shirin Ebadi's rights
organizations

Five Baha'is human rights activists who were arrested in Tehran last
week remain in prison without charges and have not been given access to
lawyers or family members, the Geneva based Baha'i International

Nicaragua indigenous group finally gains title to native lands
15 January 2009
Minority Rights Group International welcomes a decision by the
Nicaraguan Government to formally recognise the land rights of the
indigenous Awas Tingni community. In a ceremony on 14 December the
government gave the community title deeds to their 74,000 hectares of
forest land.

Internship - Working on UNICEF review project
MRG is seeking several interns to work on a project to review UNICEF�s
experience on minority children. The interns should be available to
start immediately and should be available for 3-5 days a week (exact
number to be negotiated) for a period of approximately 3 months.
This is an unpaid internship, will take place in London and MRG will
only reimburse travel and lunch expenses incurred by the interns. Please
note that only London-based applicants will be considered.

Head of Fundraising

CLOSING DATE: Friday 6th February 2009 at 5:00pm (UK time)
This hands-on role coordinates all fundraising activities; preparing
applications, monitoring fundraising targets, nurturing donors and
ensuring timely donor reporting. MRG raises the bulk of its income from
statutory grants and foundations. The ideal candidate will have at least
2 years experience of fundraising from similar sources (preferably
including EU and/or UK government funding) and will be highly organized,
with excellent interpersonal and prioritization skills, and the ability
to write well (in English). Some experience of managing staff/interns is
desirable.

Invitation to tender
Minority Rights Group International (MRG) would like to invite
individuals to tender to research and write a report on the situation of
Somali minorities and their rights.
As part of its project on Securing Protection and Promoting Fundamental
Freedoms of Vulnerable Minorities in Iraq and Somalia, Minority Rights
Group International (MRG) seeks to recruit a team of 2 Researchers
(working partly together during fieldwork, and partly independently) on
a consultancy basis to undertake research to investigate and gather
information on the situation of minorities in Somalia/Somaliland and to
draft a report based on the findings. The researchers will work
together, under the supervision of the Research Advisor / Editor to
prepare the first draft of the report.
Proposals should cover methodology, an indication of likely
interviewees, indicative travel plans and an indicative budget and
should be submitted via email or hard copy to [email protected] by 12 noon
on Tuesday 24th February 2009.
