Overview:

The accommodation of ethnocultural diversity and other forms of
difference are central to good, stable democratic governance. Yet, few
courses and schools in public administration in Europe and beyond equip
future decision-makers with the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed
for a diversity-friendly public sector.

This workshop brings together instructors from CEU and other leading
institutions to provide teachers of public administration higher
education and related fields (including policy studies, political
science, government, and related trainings topics) with a better
understanding of the connections among diversity, public administration,
and public administration education. The workshop includes conceptual
and practical sessions related to the main theme, during which
participants explore key concepts, challenges, existing practices
related to diversity management, as well as teaching methods, literature
and other resources needed in the classroom. Participants also clarify
how public administration education or institutions can be a model of
good diversity management. Participants are encouraged to present and
reflect on experiences from their own teaching contexts.

By the end of the workshop, participants will finalize a course syllabus
with reading lists.  Participant will also discuss ideas and plans for
future cooperation and on-going learning. In 2008, the Council of
Europe, Minority Rights Group-International, CPS, LGI/OSI, the European
Academy (EURAC) in Bolzano/Bozen, Italy, and other institutions and
scholars contributed reading materials for these workshops.

Additional Information:

This workshop is complemented by several opportunities for continued
learning and professional support, including small grants to translate
course materials, on-going mentoring and guest lectureships, and
participation in in-depth short courses. As a result of cooperation
between workshop organizers and select institutions, in 2009, workshop
participants had the opportunity to apply to attend, free of cost,
courses on "Human Rights, Minorities, and Diversity Management"
(Module V of the Join Masters ion European Integration and Regionalism
at EURAC) and "Minority Rights, Indigenous Peoples and Human Rights
Law (Summer School at the Irish Center for Human Rights, Galway,
Ireland). Participants might also be interested in diversity trainings

Eligibility:

Workshop organizers welcome applications from teachers of higher
education and trainers in relevant fields from the former Soviet Union,
Mongolia, South-Eastern Europe. Applicant must have a good command of
English, both written and spoken, to actively participate in workshops,
training sessions and roundtables, as well as to use resource materials
available at CEU.

Financial information:

Only faculty from the former Soviet Union, Mongolia, South-Eastern
Europe are eligible for full financial support. Citizens of EU member
states are welcome to attend our sessions but, except for exceptional
circumstances, need to cover their travel to and accommodation in
Budapest from external funding.

Funding for those applicants who have already participated in a fully
funded CEU faculty oriented program is available under the following
conditions:

- Within a four year period one is entitled to receive full funding for
two of our programs. However, it is possible to apply for a third time
in four years for a fully funded program, in which case the applicant
needs to attach to the application form a short justification of his/her
intention.

- As a general rule, within one academic/calendar year one can not
receive funding from two CEU faculty-oriented programs. Participants of
SUN are exempted from this rule.

- Applicants who wish to re-apply for the same type of CRC session (Open
House, Course Innovation or Topical Issues in Curriculum Development)
should attach to the application form a short justification of their
intention. Priority in the selection of participants will be given to
newcomers.

The above restrictions only apply for those who receive full funding
from CEU.

Applicants who are able to pay for their participation (to cover travel
and accommodation) or receive external funding are eligible to apply to
all our programs with no restriction.

To Apply:

Curriculum Resource Session application forms, application deadlines,
the session schedule and further information on the center's
outreach activities and resources may be obtained from the CRC office at
the Central European University or through national Soros Foundations.

Important Note: There are many approaches to the public management of
ethnocultural diversity and other forms of difference including gender,
disability, age and others. These approaches include, among others,
equality policies, human and minority rights, liberal multiculturalism
and diversity politics. This workshop will include a session during
which experienced lecturers and participants will present and discuss
the theoretical frameworks and approaches that underpin their courses.
To prepare for this session, we ask applicants to submit a one-page
description of their approach to the public management of diversity in
relation to their course design. Applicants may refer to specific
authors, works, theories, or broad approaches with which they are
familiar. This short description should be attached to the application
package when submitted to the CRC.
