Muslims in the European Union: Discrimination and Islamophobia

The European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) published
a new report on Islamophobia on 18 December 2006. Muslims in the
European Union: Discrimination and Islamophobia presents data on
discrimination affecting Muslims in employment, education and housing.

The report stresses that the extent and nature of discrimination and
Islamophobic incidents against European Muslims remain under-documented
and under-reported. It recommends that Member States improve the
reporting of incidents and implement more effective ant-discrimination
measures. It also includes initiatives and proposals for policy action
by EU Member State governments and the European institutions.

EUMC launches InfoBase to support action against racism

The European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) has
launched EUMC InfoBase, an online support tool aimed at those who work
on racism and human rights issues. The new tool aims to provide
impartial information on racism in the EU and can serve as a point of
reference to inform action against racial discrimination. A manual in
support of the service explains how to navigate through the system and
search for information.

EU survey reveals attitudes towards homosexuality

First results from a recent Eurobarometer survey show that attitudes

to 12% in Latvia. Marriage or similar union is currently possible in
the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Openness to adoption
of children by homosexual couples is more limited. Only 32% of the
European public support the idea.
