Happy New European Year!
The European Year of Equal Opportunities for All began on 1 January 2007
and will be officially launched at the European Equality Summit in
Berlin on 30-31 January.
The New Year also marked the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the
European Union. These countries have already been involved in
anti-discrimination activities at European level under the Community
Action Programme. They now participate in the European Year as full
members of the EU.
Romania's plans, for example, feature a national conference for 250
delegates in March, research on multiple discrimination, an art
competiton for schools and a serie of debates, seminars and round
tables.

Anti-discrimination law in your country
In 2000, the European Equality Directives (2000/43/EC and 2000/78/EC -
http://ec.europa.eu/employment_social/fundamental_rights/legis/lgdirect_en.htm)
set out the legal basis for anti-discrimination law across the EU.
A new study, available in English and French, has twin aims of providing
comprehensive and independent mapping of existing national legislative
measures (in strand 1 of the report) and their impact (in strand 2) in
tackling discrimination outside the field of employment and occupation
- on the grounds of sex, religion or belief, disability, age and sexual
orientation. The Mapping Study covers all 27 EU Member States and a
further five countries included for comparison: Australia, Canada, New
Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America.
