Call for Intern – Europe and Central Asia Programme
Fall 2006
Minority Rights Group International (MRG) is a UK-based non-governmental
organisation working to secure the rights of ethnic, religious and
linguistic minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide, and to promote
cooperation and understanding between communities. MRG’s activities are
focused on international advocacy, training, publishing and outreach and
are guided by the needs expressed by our worldwide network of minority
and indigenous partner organisations.
Minority Rights Group Europe, MRG’s office in Budapest, is currently
accepting applications for an intern to assist in implementation of
MRG’s work in Europe and Central Asia.
The internship will include the following tasks:
- conduct research which will assist in the assessment of the situation
of minorities in the Caucasus and Central Asia and selection of
potential target countries for a minority rights advocacy/capacity
building programme;
- conduct research which will assist in the development of a project
focused on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National
Minorities of the Council of Europe;
- support other programme work as needed.
Person specification: The candidate should have degree level education
in the relevant field, understanding of the international legal
framework for the protection of human and minority rights; understanding
of minority and interethnic issues in the Caucasus/Central Asia; genuine
interest in the issues; good command of English and excellent analytical
and writing skills. Knowledge of Russian and/or other language spoken in
the Caucasus/Central Asia region preferred. Knowledge of Hungarian is
helpful.
The intern is expected to work 3-5 days per week
Expected start date: as soon as possible
Expected end date: mid-December 2006 (negotiable)
The position is unpaid. MRG is able to reimburse lunch and local public
transportation costs only. Only those having the legal right to stay in
Hungary will be eligible.
The deadline for submission of applications is September 24, 2006.
