DEADLOCK IN THE FIGHT FOR AUTONOMY?
SFANTU GHEORGHE - The President with the National Szeckler's Council, or
CNS, Csapo Jozsef, unexpectedly resigned last week from his position of
this council which has been fighting for the autonomy of the Szecklers'
County. He did not explain the resignation. CNS vice-president Ferencz
Csaba said this decision should not influence the fight for autonomy. 
Council's Standing Commission, the body which run CNS, will ask Csapo
Jozsef to continue to act as CNS' president until the Commission meets
to appoint a new president.
CNS vice-president Tulit Attila added Csapo's resignation will not
influence CNS fight to get the territorial autonomy of the Szeckler's
County. And in addition, CNS will continue the discussions on the issue
of autonomy and the referendum with UDMR leadership, with the National
Council of Ethnic Hungarians in Transylvania, or CNMT, with the Ethnic
Hungarian Civic Union, or UCM, and with the representatives of ethnic
Hungarian civic organizations and of the historic churches.

NEW DEFERRAL IN HADARENI CASE
TIRGU MURES -The Mures Court deferred Tuesday, October 31, for the third
time in a row, the prosecution of the appeal submitted by the ethnic
Roma in Hadareni commune, Mures County, against two decisions of the
Ludus Courthouse, that had occurred in the inter-ethnic conflict in this
town. Defense lawyer Meda Grama, representing the ethnic Roma, and
lawyer Flaviu Ionescu, representing the Romanians, asked the court to
link the files in this case scheduled for hearing on October 31 and
November 7, 2006, to a common date.
The court will pass a decision in that respect on November 7th.
The two files with Mures Court pertain to the appeal against the
decisions of Ludus Court to annul the minutes on seizing the assets of
several Romanians in the Hadareni commune. The Romanians were sentenced
for having set on fire 14 houses of the ethnic Roma people during the
violent conflict in September 1993.
The Ludus Court, as first instance, approved the foreclosure appeal of
the Romanians in Hadareni and annulled the minutes on seizing their
assets.
The judicial execution acted based on a decision of The Tirgu Mures
Court of Appeals on February 2004, corroborated by the Romanian Supreme
Court on May 2005.
Some 14 houses were set on fire and four persons were killed, namely a
Romanian and three ethnic Roma citizens, during the conflict between
September 20-21, 1993.

ROMANIA'S EDUCATION MINISTER AGAINST ETHNIC SEGREGATION
SFINTU GHEORGHE - Romania's Minister of Education and Research, Mihail
Hardau, on Thursday, September 26th, said he is against the
establishment of a state university teaching in ethnic Hungarian tongue.
He rejects all kind of segregation.
"The idea is not profitable, as a university teaching in ethnic
Hungarian already exists in Tirgu Mures; the documents on the relevance
of setting up of another university were not even submitted," Hardau
said. "Babes Bolyai" University is a multicultural university, "one of
the best" of this type.
The Bolyai Initiative Committee, the Association of Ethnic Hungarians'
Youngsters in Transylvania and other youngsters' associations organized
the "Open Day" of the future Bolyai University, in several cities in
Transylvania, some ten days ago. They asked for the creation of a state
university teaching in ethnic Hungarian tongue.

SO KERES EUROPE?
BUCHAREST - TURN Cultural Association and the International Romani Art
Festival were opened Wednesday, November 1st. The festival called, "So
keres Europa?" aims to offer a new perspective upon such a relatively
unknown Roma, as an ethnic and cultural group, a press statement read.
The event will include live concerts, exhibitions, competitions, a book
launch, movie projections, happenings, parades, theater and dance shows,
fairs, workshops, debates, conferences and classes of ethnic Roma
history.
"It is time the ethnic Roma integrate in the society, and people give up
prejudice and racism, which are vital issues for our development as
people and as a society," the statement also read.
The partners of the event are Parudimos Association, National Center to
Fight Discrimination, Rubin Foundation, Aualeu Garage and Courtyard
Theater, Resita Voluntariate Center.

ETHNIC ROMA WOMEN EXAMINED BY FORMER HEALTH MIN
FOCSANI - Romania's former health minister Daniela Bartos examined
Saturday, October 28, some 50 ethnic Roma women in Marasesti town,
Modruzeni district.
Daniela Bartos came to Modruzeni, one of the most important ethnic Roma
communities in Vrancea, accompanied by the Secretary of State, Mariea
Ionescu, president of the National Agency for Ethnic Roma.
"The Romanian Agency which I run develops a program exclusively meant
for women - "With us, among us, about us, women."
The program aims to analyze the health status of ethnic Roma women and
to subsequently create a health strategy for the ethnics", said the
Secretary of State.
The project aims to examine the health status of ethnic Roma women in
ten towns, including Modruzeni district.

ETHNIC ROMAS MOST DISCRIMINATED IN THE PRESS
BUCHAREST - The Press Monitoring Agency, or AMP, and the Romanian Center
for Investigative Journalism, or CRJI, launched Monday, October 30th,
the magazine "Minoritati si Discriminare in Agenda Presei", (Minorities
and Discrimination in the Printed Press Agenda). The magazine includes
four articles written by investigation journalists under CRJI
coordination, a survey made by AMP on the minorities issue mirrored by
the press in Romania, and legislation and deontology on discrimination
and press-minorities relationship.
The ethnic Romas are most often portrayed in Romanian newspapers, in a
negative light, said AMP survey. Journalists in Dolj (southern Romania)
are the fiercest enemies of ethnic Roma, said Stefan Candea, coordinator
within CRJI. Some 20 articles of the 76 apparitions in central media and
140 articles of the 395 apparitions in local media were negative.
The photo gallery "Minoritati si Grupuri Discriminate" (Minorities and
Discriminated Groups) was inaugurated on this occasion. The gallery
includes seven photo-feature reports on various topics regarding the
discrimination and social exclusion.
