Dear colleagues,
The United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) launched
an online consultation / call for comments on the Secretary-General's
Report on International Migration and Development -
http://www.un.org/Docs/journal/asp/ws.asp?m=A/60/871.
NGLS will compile the comments in a report which will be made available
at the hearings on 12 July.
On July 12th there is a hearing on migration and development in the UN
(New York) with participation from NGOs, civil society and private
sector. The outcome of this hearing will be a report which will be
handed over to the General Assembly, as input to a High Level Dialogue
which will take place in September.
This on-line consultation on the Secretary Genral's report provides an
opportunity for a wider range of organisations to contribute to these
discussions.
We invite your organisation to submit comments and observations.

NGLS is launching a Call for Comments

Secretary-General's report on International Migration and Development
(http://www.un.org/Docs/journal/asp/ws.asp?m=A/60/871) on the NGLS
website (www.un-ngls.org), which will be ongoing until 27 June. The
online call is targeted to members of civil society to solicit their
comments and observations on the Secretary-General?s Report in the
run-up to the 12 July Informal Interactive Hearings with NGOs, Civil
Society and the Private Sector, and the High-Level Dialogue on
International Migration and Development in September.
NGLS is calling for comments that will mirror the structure of the
Informal Interactive Hearings and the High-Level Dialogue:
Segment 1: Promoting a comprehensive rights-based approach to
international migration, and ensuring respect for and protection of the
human rights of all migrants and their families.
Segments 2 & 3: International migration and development � challenges for
social and economic policies in sending and receiving countries.
Segment 4: Policy responses � Promoting the building of partnerships and
capacity-building and the sharing of best practices at all levels,
including the bilateral and regional levels, for the benefit of
countries and migrants alike.
- Respondents may respond to any theme or section of the report but
please indicate which Segment is being responded to and, more
specifically, which paragraph of the report.
- Please limit comments to a maximum of 1,000 words.
- Please indicate your name, organization, and region before submitting
text comments.
The Call for Comments provides an opportunity for civil society,
especially those organizations who will be unable to participate in the
Hearings, to transmit their views, suggestions and ideas on issues
discussed in the Secretary-General's Report on International Migration
and Development, which will provide the framework for discussion during
the Informal Interactive Hearings with NGOs, Civil Society and the
Private Sector (12 July) and the High-Level Dialogue on International
Migration and Development (14-15 September). Comments will be collected
and, based on the overall response, a compilation of comments will be
drawn up by NGLS and made available to NGOs and Member States attending
the 12 July Informal Interactive Hearings and will be disseminated
widely in the period leading up to the High-level Dialogue in September.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
NGLS is pleased to inform you that it has launched its redesigned
website (www.un-ngls.org). The 2006 NGLS Survey, conducted in April
2006, solicited almost 800 responses with a number of respondents
calling for a more ?streamlined? website. Taking these suggestions into
consideration, NGLS?s new website is more user friendly, features simple
navigation for complex searches, and loads quickly. It also provides
easier access to reports and other types of information and includes a
working site-level search engine. A light version of the NGLS website
will soon be available.
New also is NGLS's capacity to call for online comments. In this
connection, NGLS is calling for comments on the Secretary-General?s
Report on International Migration and Development until 27 June 2006.
