European Commission announces new call for proposals
This call is for national awareness-raising campaigns and is restricted
to national authorities or NGOs and equality bodies nominated to act on
behalf of a national authority. The maximum amount available for
activities is �150 000 for each Member State. Activities could be
organised under the theme of the European Year of Equal Opportunities
for All, which will take place in 2007.

Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Small Embassy Projects Programme
(Matra/KAP)
Application deadline: June 16, 2006
Matra is a major programme run by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It has a wide range of components, and its aim is to support the process
of social transformation in Central and Eastern Europe. Matra responds
to private initiatives. It focuses on activities that contribute to the
further development of an open, pluralist, democratic society, firmly
embedded in the rule of law. Matra seeks in particular to strengthen the
fabric of civil society, stressing the importance of cooperation and
interaction between private and public bodies. The Matra Small Embassy
Projects Programme, better known as Matra/KAP, is part of it.

The CRE's inquiry into equality, race relations and sites for Roma and
Irish Travellers
Councils are failing Roma and Irish travellers, who have the poorest
life chances of any ethnic group in Britain, a damning report from the
Commission for Racial Equality has claimed. The 290 page report said it
had identified a 'culture of oversight' that made it difficult to
provide services for Roma and Irish travellers, especially housing and
homelessness. While council officers knew a great deal about other
ethnic groups it found that this was rarely the case for Roma and Irish
travellers. And despite a mix of living conditions, in many cases the
commission found they were still far below those expected in
conventional housing.

ECRI: Danish government should recognise the Roma as a national minority
16. May 2006 - Council of Europe Committee against Racism (ECRI) has
strongly recommended that the Danish government recognise the Roma as a
national minority under the Framework Convention This is one of the
recommendations in ECRI's report on Denmark published today. "Romano"
first raised this issue with then Prime Minister Mr Poul Nyrup Rasmussen

ALDA General Assembly and Conference on Minorities to be held in
Budapest
The Association of the Local Democracy Agencies is organising an
international conference �Europe at the Crossroads: Minority Conflicts
as a Menace to Peace or as an Opportunity? The role of European local
authorities� in Budapest on 8 and 9 June 2006. The event will take place
in the Hotel Taverna and the City Council of Budapest (see addresses
below). The main objective is to reflect how European citizens and local
authorities can actively contribute to making Europe their own space in
which they feel free and safe, regardless of their ethical or linguistic
background. It will be assessed in how far Europe has become a space in
which local authorities can be active, grow, use their talents, learn
from each other and make their citizens feel appreciated and respected,
to guarantee that the unprecedented experience of 60 years of peace can
be perpetuated.
A press conference will be held at the City Hall on 9 June 2006 at 9.30.
