Nationalism and National Identities Today: Multidisciplinary
Perspectives

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANEL PROPOSALS

At the end of the Cold War many Western commentators anticipated the
advent of a New World Order of unipolar American hegemony or/and of
global governance under the rule of international law, enforceable human
rights and democratic institutions. Since then, those predictions have
been met by challenges on behalf of national identities, ethnic rights
and demands for the reassertion of statehood. Reflection on the present
and future 
prospects of nationalism and national identities has retained and raised
its status as one of the major research areas in the social sciences and
humanities. After successful conferences in 2005 and 2006 on aspects of
multiculturalism, CRONEM�s focus for the 2007 event is on
nationalism(s), national identities and the politics of ethnicity. A
number of leading authorities from a range of different disciplines �
political science, political geography, history, psychology, sociology,
sociolinguistics � have agreed to give keynote addresses. As on previous
occasions, besides the plenary presentations, there will be ample
opportunities for papers to be presented in parallel panel sessions.

Centre for International Borders Research (CIBR), Queen's University

Susan Condor, Senior Lecturer, Department of Psychology, University of
Lancaster
John Hutchinson, Reader in Nationalism, Department of Government, London
School of Economics
Patrick Stevenson, Professor of Modern Languages, School of Humanities,
University of Southampton
George Kolankiewicz, Professor of Sociology with special reference to
East Central Europe, School of Slavonic and East European Studies,
University College London and Managing Director, Centre for East
European Language 
Based Area Studies CEELBAS

Panel proposals (including a general introduction of about 300 words,
plus 300-word abstracts of each of the papers) and proposals for
individual papers (300-word abstracts) are invited on any aspect of
contemporary nationalism, but particularly those addressing the
following themes:
Conceptualising nationhood and national identities today
Comparisons of new and old forms of nationalism
Nationalistic reactions to globalisation and transnational flows
Reassertions of national and ethnic identities
National and ethnic acculturation processes
Secessionist and irredentist movements
Diasporic nationalisms
Failed states and nationhood
Civic nationalism
Ethnic conflict regulation
Nationalism and religion
Nationalism and gender
Nationalism and youth
Nationalism as ideology and mythology
