JOB ANNOUNCEMENT - STAFF ATTORNEY

The European Roma Rights Centre ("ERRC") seeks an experienced attorney,
fluent in Russian language, for its legal defense program to litigate
Roma rights, ethnic/race discrimination, and related cases in European
and international courts and to devise and conduct training sessions for
Central and East European lawyers in public interest litigation
strategies and techniques.

The ERRC is a public interest law organization that defends the human
rights of the Roma (Gypsies) throughout Europe and serves as a legal
resource centre for advocates working in this field.  The ERRC pursues
its objectives by engaging in legal defense, research, monitoring and
reporting, education, and advocacy.  The ERRC's core legal defence work
is to engage in impact litigation on behalf of Roma before both domestic
and international courts.

Based in Budapest, the attorney will work with the legal team to develop
and implement legal strategy, handle selected cases, draft amicus curiae
briefs and legal submissions to domestic and international judicial
fora, work with lawyers, judges, human rights organisations and other
relevant institutions.  The staff attorney may also participate in
legislative and policy review and drafting, advocacy and lobbying, as
well as training and public education on legal issues.

Specifications

Essential Requirements:
* law degree and bar membership from a country within the Council of
Europe region;
* a minimum of three years' experience litigating human rights cases;
* a demonstrable commitment to human rights;
* good understanding of human rights norms and their enforcement
mechanisms at the regional and international levels, especially
demonstrated familiarity with the European Convention on Human Rights;
* demonstrated capacity to develop and apply successfully innovative
legal strategies;
* excellent English language legal writing skills and fluency in written
and spoken English;
* fluency in Russian;

Preferred:
* knowledge of legal systems of Central/Eastern Europe;
* knowledge of other languages of Central/Eastern Europe;
* experience in training/teaching litigation skills;
* Able to deal with time pressure and a demanding work environment
* prior work or other experience with Romani communities;
* prior work or intern experience with public interest organizations
focusing on human rights and anti-discrimination litigation;
