EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT REJECTS AMENDMENT ON RIGHTS OF MACEDONIANS IN
BULGARIA
With 330 votes against, 141 in favor and 146 abstained, the European
Parliament rejected the amendment on the Macedonian community in
Bulgaria, tabled by the Greens. "Dnevnik" said the amendment called on
Bulgaria to recognize the Macedonian minority living in the country and
to register the OMO Ilinden-Pirin" as a political party. The amendment
was rejected as it was not supported by the major political groups, the
Socialists and the Demo-christians.
Following the amendment's rejection, Stojko Stojkov - "OMO
Ilinden-Pirin", said he hoped for help from the European Committee's
Council of Ministers. "The Committee Is has jurisdiction over the work
of the Court for Human Rights in Strasburg, which condemned Bulgaria for
refusing to register "OMO Ilinden-Pirin" as a political party. I hope
the Committee will force Bulgaria to comply with the Court of Human
Rights rulings. Bulgaria's stand that the entire matter has ended when
the state of Bulgaria paid the fine and thereby respected the ruling of
the Court for Human Rights is ridiculous. We demand respect for our
rights, not fines for disrespects of our rights", Stojkov said.
