PRO-ETHNIC FESTIVAL - DAYS OF ETHNIC COMMUNITIES IN ROMANIA 

SIGHISOARA - Association Inter-ethnic Educational Center for Youngsters
organized during August 18 and 27 the 6th edition of Pro-ethnic
Festival- Days of Ethnic Communities in Romania. 

This years festival meets 20 ethnic communities and over 700 artists
belonging to the following ethnics: Albanian, Armenian, Bulgarian,
Czech, Croatian, Jewish, German, Greece, Italian, Macedonian, Magyar,
Polish, Ethnic Roma, Ruthenia, Lipovan Russians, Serbian, Slovakian,
Tatars, Turks, Ukrainian. The official opening of the Festival
ProEthnics 2006 was held on August 18 and dances and traditional
exhibitions, contemporary and traditional art exhibitions, puppet
theater, interactive activities recitals and recitals with special
guests such as Desperado, Hara, VH2, Fanfara 10 Prajini, BlackBeers,
Ioan Gyuri Pascu & The BlueWorkers, Harry Tavitian, Kaska, Dancs
Anamarie, SinKord and Teodora, Band Villa Kuhnterbunt and Groupe
Culturel Maag Dann in Senegal were held throughout ten days.

The ProEthnics festival is the most important project developed by C. E.
I. T. - Association Inter-ethnic Educational Center for Youngsters in
Sighisoara. Association Inter-ethnic Traditional Center Sighisoara, the
main organizer of ProEthnics Festival, benefited from the financial
support of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relationships in Stuttgart
(IFA), with the Department for Inter-ethnic Relations of the Government
of Romania, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bucharest
and of Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs. The Festival was held
under the high patronage of Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as under the patronage of His
Excellency Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bucharest.

SEMINAR AND PREMIERES FOR JOURNALISTS WRITING ABOUT ETHNIC ROMA 

BUCHAREST - The Group for Social Dialogue held a seminar for journalists
within the social campaign on preventing and fighting prejudice and
discrimination against ethnic Roma, the project "DIFFERENT - THE SAME
BLOOD". The project was financed through Phare Program Development of
Civil Society - Democracy and Human Rights, and aims to make a social
campaign on fighting and preventing prejudice and discrimination against
the ethnic Roma citizens.

The partners within the project (Center of Resources for Ethnic Roma
Communities in Cluj-Napoca in collaboration with National Agency for
Ethnic Roma, National Council to Fight Discrimination and Association
"Equal Chances") have developed in the past months a media campaign
(radio commercial, leaflets, out-doors commercial, radio and TV shows)
that debated the issue of ethnic Roma discrimination. They organized
events meant to render the majority population more sensitive to ethnic
Roma problems.

The seminar included a press monitoring within the project, discussions
on the monitoring and concrete cases of ethnic Roma discrimination. The
participants could watch sequences of news presenting tendentious points
of view against the ethnic Roma.

Journalists of printed press who published articles and photography with
and about the ethnic Roma during October 1, 2005 and June 30, 2006 were
awarded during the seminar.

The winner of the 1st position was Daniel Tomozei (Rondul de Sibiu), for
the article "21 century, the underworld". The 2nd position was filled in
by Zoltan Petru (Jurnalul National) and Maria Bercea (Revista 22), and
the 3rd position by Elena Stan (Jurnalul National). Thjree mentions were
also granted: first mention Nicoleta Butnaru (Obiectiv Vocea Brailei),
second mention Daniel Ganga (Divers) and third mention Alina
Constantinescu (Divers).

ETHNIC ROMA AND THE HOLOCAUST 

BUCHAREST - During August 21-23, the National Institute to Study the
Holocaust in Romania "Elie Wiesel" organized the seminar on the History
of ethnic Roma within the context of the Holocaust in Romania. The
seminar included debates and working groups on the relevant documents
for the history of ethnic Roma deported during the Second World War. 

Some of the topics under discussion were "Influences of racist
stereotypes upon the contemporary historians", "Oral history on the war
and the ethnic Roma community in Romania". New documents from the
archive of Buzau Police (correspondence between the police department
and the members of the ethnic Roma community) were presented. 

One of the workshops was an analysis of photography with "ethnic Roma",
from Jewish collections on the Holocaust. The seminar finished
yesterday, August 23, with projecting the movie "Hidden pains" produced
by Michelle Kelso, a touching documentary on the history of ethnic Roma
deported in the camps in Transdniester during the Second World War.

MCC ELECTS PROJECT FOR THE MEMORIAL OF THE HOLOCAUST 

BUCHAREST - The project of sculptor Peter Jacobi won the contest
organized by Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs, or MCC, to set
up a memorial of the Holocaust in Bucharest, the ministrys website says. 
The Commission chose Peter Jacobis sample and recommended him not to
take into account, in settling the project, the opinions of experts in
the history of the Holocaust in Romania. Altogether, the jury
recommended the artist to collaborate with an architect to set up an
optimum urban insertion of the Memorial. MCC took the decision on
setting up the Memorial following the recommendations of the
International Commission to study the Holocaust in Romania (the Wiesel
Commission) and the consultations with important persons of the Jewish
community in Romania, survivors of the Holocaust. 

The ministry announced on August 23 the creation contest to set up such
a monument. It selected three projects in the end, from 35 in the
beginning. The memorial will be located within the area Lipscani, Ion
Brezoianu, Mihai Voda and eng. Anghel Saligny, near the current
headquarters of Ministry of Administration and of the Interior. The
author of the selected oeuvre could redesign the public area the
monument will be located. 

Peter Jacobi was born in 1935, in Ploiesti and graduated the Institute
of Plastic Arts Nicolae Grigorescu in Bucharest, promotion 1961. Between
1961 and 1970, he exhibited with his wife Ritzi Jacobi, at Lausanne and
Venice, to subsequently become a teacher in 1971, at a higher design
school in Pforzheim. After many personal and group exhibitions he took
part in abroad, Peter Jacobi returns in Romanian in the 90s, to exhibit
in Bucharest, Craiova, Brasov, Sibiu, Timisoara. The artist received the
award of the Bi-annual Exhibition in Sao Paulo (1973) and the Award of
Foundation Lewis - Tiffany in New York (1974). In 2002, he had a
retrospective exhibition at Romanias National Art Museum, for which he
was awarded "Ion Andreescu" Prize of the Romanian Academy.

UDMR DEPUTY ANTAL ANDRAS RETURN FROM "TOURNAMENT OF AUTONOMY" 

SFINTU GHEORGHE - MP Antal Arpad Andras from Democratic Union of Ethnic
Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) and Romanian journalist Dan Manolachescu,
president with Covasna Community Association, came back on August 18,
from the "tournament of autonomy". The two men traveled 9,365 kilometers
by car and other 300 kilometers by bike. 

They talked about the experienced they witnesses in each autonomous
region they visited, namely Kosovo, Montenegro, South Tyrol, Catalonia,
Basks Country. They talked about how they saw "two volcanoes still
active, and other three inactive". While the relations between the
Serbians and the Albanians are still extremely tense in Kosovo,
everything is very peaceful in South Tyrol, "Italians lead the coffee
shops, and the Austrians the butchers". 

Antal said the autonomy in Catalonia could be a role model to be
enforced in the countries of the European Union. 

President with Association for Community, journalist Dan Manolachescu,
said it is not his problem whether the Szecklers County will be
autonomous. They will write a survey based on the discussion with the
natives, authorities, representatives of different communities in the
autonomous regions. They aim to send the survey to Romanias president
Traian Basescu, and want to have a talk with the president as regards
the autonomy. 
UDMR deputy Antal Arpad Andras, next to a journalist, started the
"tournament of autonomy" on July 31, throughout several European regions
with such a statute.

WEEK OF INTERETHNIC FILM IN THE DANUBE DELTA 

TULCEA - During August 28 and September 4, the people interested could
see representative artistic movies for the cultures of seven ethnic
minorities in Tulcea city (eastern Romania), within "Week of
Inter-ethnic Movie". 
The event was organized by the Association European Center for Diversity
Tulcea, with the financial support of Department of Inter-ethnic
Relations and in partnership with the City Hall of Tulcea municipal, and
aims to grant free of charge access to the citizens in Tulcea to shows
on the traditions of this ethnics.

Each of the minorities included in the programme (Italian, Ukrainian,
German, Russian, Ethnic Roma, Turkish and Greek) will be dedicated one
evening. The Civic Square of the city will host a show of music, dance,
parade of traditional costumes, followed by a representative artistic
movie for the country of origin of the aforementioned ethnic
communities. Some of the movies proposed by the local communities in
Tulcea are: "Italian-like divorce - Divorzio allitaliana " (1962,
directed by Pietro Germi), "Gadjo Dilo" (1997, directed by Tony Gadlif),
"Zorba the Greek "(1964, directed by Michael Cocayannis).

"Week of interethnic movie" will start Monday, August 28, with the
support of the Italian community in Romania, Tulcea branch. The artistic
show of each series will be held by ensembles such as: Ensemble "Tuna"
(Turkish Democratic Union in Romania, Tulcea branch), Ensemble "Molotii"
(Community of Lipoven Russians in Romania, Tulcea branch), Ensemble
"Phralipen" (Ethnic Roma Party in Tulcea).
