VIOLATIONS OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM PERSIST
State Department Report Calls for More Improvement

The State Department's annual International Religious Freedom Report,
released last week by its Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor,
criticized a number of countries for poor performance. According to the
list, the worst offenders in the reporting period - between July 2004
and July 2005 - were Burma, China, Cuba, and North Korea. Among the less
serious offenders were Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Uzbekistan. The
thrust of the annual report, mandated by Congress in 1996, is the
identification of attempts to "control religious thought expression" by
"totalitarian and authoritarian regimes." "The practice of religion is
often seen as a threat to the state's ideology or power," the report
pointed out. "Oftentimes, the state suppresses religious groups based on
the dominant ethnicity of groups."
