NEWS REPORTS DIFFER ON PUTIN'S STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS
But What Did He Want to Say?

In his 47-minute-long state of the nation speech before the joint
session of Parliament on April 25 and carried live on state television,
President Vladimir Putin put forth many ideas. They offered little that
was new, but the ideas were so numerous that he baffled a press trying
to zero in on the essence of the keynote address and eager to divine
what the head of state really wanted to say. Perhaps lacking guidance
from Kremlin officials or perhaps simply reflecting their own
assessments of the increasingly controversial leader, three news
agencies, expected to be the least subjective of news organizations,
filed three dramatically different reports on the same speech.

The new head of the Roman Catholic Church has a small "brown spot" in
his youthful past as well as staunchly conservative convictions on a
series of issues, from the role of women and to "the grave spiritual
deficiency" of other religions. Nevertheless, leaders of the Russian
Orthodox Church as well as of the Jewish community welcomed his
election.

At the same time, Russian Orthodox and Jewish leaders offer contrasting
interpretations of the new pontiff's close friendship with his
predecessor. The first group hopes for a new relationship because he
comes from Germany and the second is confident of continuity with the
great Pole who sought friendship with the Jewish people. 

According to the emphatically secular "New York Times," Cardinal Joseph
Ratzinger, who has become Pope Benedict XVI, is a son of World War II
Germany as well as of a "deeply Roman Catholic region, Bavaria."
