PRIDE AND PARANOIA
Criticism of Russia Is Arrogant, Says a Professor in Moscow
Whether warning about dangerous trends in the present or trying to
envisage the future, Russian intellectuals rely on the past, but their
interpretation of the past often bends the facts. The influence of 70
years of the Communist Party Line defining "objective reality" still
looms large.
In an essay titled "Russia-Europe: Friends or Enemies?" distributed on
May 30 by the semi-official news agency RIA Novosti, Professor Boris
Shmelev perceived a "reciprocal influence without parallel." He observed
that victory in World War II strengthened Russia's "geopolitical and
strategic positions unprecedentedly" while increasing "fear of its
might" that "eventually brought the European nations together." Without
recognizing the very real threat that the USSR posed to West European
nations, Shmelev seems to take credit for their banding together. In his
interpretation of the Cold War, "Soviet Communist Party members
proclaimed the inevitable victory of communism, which they pictured with
due regard for the social, political, and economic realities of Western
Europe." One wonders what Shmelev might mean by "due regard."
