FRANCE: TRIPLE REJET DE L'AMENDEMENT POUR LA CHARTE DES LANGUES

Apr�s plus d'une heure de d�bat, les d�put�s fran�ais ont rejet� hier
soir les deux amendements et le sous-amendement d�pos�s par les d�put�s
des trois principaux groupes politiques au parlement fran�ais. (The
French parliament has rejected any amendment of its constitution in
order to allow ratification of the European Charter for Regional or
Minority Languages).


AUTOMATIC WEB TRANSLATOR UNDER DEVELOPMENT FOR OFFICIAL LANGUAGES IN THE
SPANISH STATE

A group of corporations and universities from Galiza, Euskadi, Catalonia
and Valencia are working on automatic translation software for Galician,
Catalan, Basque and Spanish. With open code, the translator is to be on
the net in 2006 and will be free on non profit basis. 


CHARTER FOR REGIONAL OR MINORITY LANGUAGES: CAN THE EU CONSTITUTION HELP
FRANCE RATIFY?

Yesterday, the French parliament began to examine a revised
constitutional law, in anticipation of the adoption of the new European
constitution. Minority language organizations have seized this
opportunity to put forward an amendment to the future law which would
allow France to legally ratify the charter for minority languages.

It was a bit like trying to sell ice to the Eskimos but Irish language
TV station, TG4, has succeeded in selling it's Irish language soap, Ros
na R�n, in the very bastion of soaps, the US of A. Philadelphia public
broadcast channel, WYBE, have confirmed that they have bought
broadcasting rights for Ros na R�n and will begin showing it later this
year.

CLOSURE

"The overwhelming support which L� received from readers and supporters,
from the Irish language community, and from minority language activists
throughout Europe was the primary factor in overcoming this threat [of
closure]. This is a victory for the Irish language and it's a triumph
for free speech." That was how Ciar�n � Pronntaigh, editor of the Irish
language daily paper L� described the news that Interreg funding for the
paper, which has been delayed for half a year, has at last been given
the green light.
