ETHNIC MINORITIES AND AUSTRIA'S STATUS AS THE PROTECTING POWER OF SOUTH
TYROL TO BE INCLUDED IN NEW AUSTRIAN CONSTITUTION

Austria is currently in the process of changing it's constitution. An
important element of the new constitution will be a minority protection
clause. In the meantime the Austrian Social Democrats, the senior
opposition SP�, have announced their support for the inclusion of
Austria's role as the protecting power of the majority German-speaking
province of South Tyrol into the constitution.
TEN MILLION EURO FOR THE BANK WHICH USES GALICIAN

To the financial mind of a bank, how profitable is it to use a
lesser-used language such as Galician? Now there is an answer: ten
million euros. It is the approximate amount of funds that the Galician
language NGO A Mesa pola Normalizaci�n Ling��stica says its
Galician-speaking supporters have in their accounts and savings. Faced
with only the token use of Galician by banks, this NGO aims to bring
together all those bank customers who are ready to change their account
to a bank which communicates to them in Galician.
ROMANIA: NEW GOVERNMENT SET TO ACT IN FAVOUR OF MINORITIES

The beginning of the New Year sees the new Romanian Government starting
out on an ambitious programme. It aims not only to fulfill the
requirements of EU accession and ending corruption, but it also gives
hope for improving the situation of ethnic minorities.
LANGUAGE INTERGROUP TO WORK MORE CLOSELY WITH THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE

The new European Parliament Intergroup for National Minorities,
Constitutional Regions and Regional Languages met in Strasbourg on
Thursday with representatives from the Council of Europe's European
Charter for Regional and Minority Languages (ECRML) to hear an update on
progress with the Charter and to exchange views on its capabilities. The
Intergroup and the Council of Europe's ECRML Secretariat agreed to work
more closely together.
