Call for Papers

2006 Human Rights Award 

Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law
American University Washington College of Law

The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law is pleased to announce
a Call for Papers for the 2006 Human Rights Award. Candidates for the
Award include those with a law degree who have demonstrated experience
or interest in international human rights law. In order to participate
in the Award, applicants must submit an unpublished legal article/paper
written in English or Spanish solely by the candidate. The Academy will
grant two Awards, one for the best article in English and the other for
the best article in Spanish.  The Award in each case will consist of: 

1. A scholarship* to participate in the 2006 Summer Program of the
Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law 

2. Travel expenses* to attend the Academy in Washington, D.C. 

3. Living expenses* for the three weeks of the Academy 

For the year 2006, candidates must choose a subject pertaining to
“Justiciability of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: Legal
approaches and the contributions of case law.”  The articles must be
25-35 pages in length, including footnotes, double spaced, and use
12-point Times New Roman font.  Articles should be sent via email to
hracademy@wcl.american.edu in Microsoft Word format.  Articles sent via
fax will not be accepted. 
Articles must be received by February 10, 2006 at 6:00 pm EST.

The Honor Jury deciding the Award is comprised of professionals with a
recognized expertise in international human rights law. The decision of
the jury will be announced via the Academy’s website on March 24, 2006.

The Summer Program of the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law
is the only intensive, three week program in the world to offer human
rights courses in both English and Spanish.  Every year the Academy
hosts over 25 visiting world-renowned scholars and activists who teach
courses on topics including regional human rights approaches; the United
Nations; international criminal tribunal; human rights and development;
women’s rights; terrorism and human rights; international humanitarian
law; and much more.  As a Graduate Certificate Program, the program is
open to lawyers, professionals in the human rights field, and law
students, who can earn up to seven credits toward their degree.  This
year’s program will take place May 30-June 16, 2006.  For more
