Newsletter European Roma Information Office
During recent months our e-news services have been irregular, but we
plan to resume our monthly e-letter from September and will introduce a
few specialized e-services for members. An overhaul of our website will
also take place in September.
ERIO news
In July, ERIO�s Executive Director, Ivan Ivanov, was a keynote speaker
at a conference focusing on the participation of Roma in elections in
Sofia. This conference was organized in response to the electoral
success of the extremist party Ataka.
The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) published its shadow reports
for 2004. The European Shadow Report which includes materials published
and researched by ERIO is available at

ERIO, in partnership with DiploFoundation, launched the one-year Roma
Diplomacy programme in July with the first seminar in Bucharest,
involving 25 young Roma activists. More details can be found at

An article on the Decade of Roma Inclusion by the Deputy Director of

The European Center for Antiziganism Reseach

Reports
The most recent issue in the European Diversity and Autonomy Papers is
entitled The Role of the Union in Integrating the Roma: Present and
Possible Future. The authors of this profound analysis are Olivier De
Schutter (Professor of Human Rights Law at the University of Louvain
(Belgium), Member of the Global Law School Faculty at New York
University, and Co-ordinator of the EU Network of Independent Experts on
Fundamental Rights) and Annelies Verstichel (who worked as an Associated
Expert to the EU Network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights on
Thematic Comment No. 3: "The Rights of Minorities in the European
Union", March 2005).
The paper describes the important contribution Council Directive
2000/43/EC of 29 June 2000 implementing the principle of equal treatment
between persons irrespective of racial or ethnic origin has made to
improve the situation of the Roma in the Union. The report can be
