In its summer camp, the new national youth organization Nashi (Russian
for "Ours"), promoted by the Russian government, brought together a
leading Russian Orthodox cleric and a Muslim mufti, in addition to
high-ranking state officials. Nashi's importance on the national scene
was further enhanced by a party given by President Vladimir Putin on
July 26 on the lawn of his state residence in Zavidovo, north of Moscow,
as the youngsters were returning home from the camp. It was his second
public contact with the organization set up only three months ago.
According to Reuters, Putin "appeared to give his blessing to a
pro-Kremlin youth movement that opponents say was formed to head off
Ukrainian-style mass protests in the run-up to the 2008 presidential
elections." "I am absolutely convinced that if you are not
over-regimented and not too formalistic, then you will be able to help
the leadership of the country, society and the state," Putin told a
handpicked group of 56 leaders, known by the old Bolshevik term
"commissars." He added that Nashi can help the state solve problems such
as racism, alcoholism, and drug addiction.
