A REVOLUTION WITHOUT A COLOR
But Is It a Revolution?
Unlike the revolutions in Ukraine and Georgia v the first called
"orange" and the second "rose" - the Kyrgyz revolution has so far
earned no agreed-upon coloring. It may become known not so much for a
crowd-s sudden storming of government offices but for a compromise
negotiated between the ancien regime and its opposition. One
disheartened Kyrgyz television reporter has already rejected the idea of
a comparison with the other two revolutions in the former USSR and put
down the Kyrgyz uprising as "an Asian riot." Its success will be
measured not only by bringing about stability v the traditional measure
- but by the ways the new regime will treat the various ethnic
minorities (Uighurs, Uzbeks, and Russians, to mention a few) as at least
some of the revolutionaries are suspected of Kyrgyz nationalist and/or
Islamic fundamentalist sympathies. Whichever way the crisis evolves, the
world will be watching for signs of similar regime changes in other
parts of the former Soviet Union.
