MARKO BELA'S SLOGAN: "TRANSYLVANIAN PRESIDENT FOR AN EUROPEAN ROMANIA"

CLUJ-NAPOCA �Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) candidate
to the presidency of Romania Marko Bela announced on September 17,
during a press conference, that his electoral slogan for the
presidential elections due in November is: "Transylvanian president for
a European Romania". Marko Bela noticed he is the only runner to the
Presidency coming from Transylvania and therefore, he decided to use a
slogan mainly addressing to people in this region of Romania. UDMR
leader also stated he hopes to be voted by the Romanian electorate as
well, counting both on ethnic Hungarians and Romanians' votes.
UDMR�s electoral program is called �Dialogue to autonomy�. �We believe
the dialogue, negotiations and collaboration are the only ways to
accomplish the targets of the ethnic Hungarian community, which explains
the denomination of the political program�, explained Marko Bela.

HUNGARIANS IN ROMANIA AFFECTED BY CUT IN THE SUMS TO BE RECEIVED FROM

CLUJ-NAPOCA � The cut of the sums annually granted by the Government of
Hungary for the ethnic Hungarians in Romania affects their development,
UDMR chairman Marko Bela said. Marko also stated that negotiations are
being carried on with the Government in Budapest not to cut the sums
granted to ethnic Hungarians outside Hungary. Marko says that Hungary�s
budget draft for 2005 stipulates a cut between 25 and 50% of the sums
meant to keep Magyars� tradition in the neighboring countries. "We do
not agree with this cut but Hungary decides how much to support the
Magyars� culture and education. This worrying situation causes
problems", stated UDMR chairman. He gave as example Hungarian Private
University "Sapientia", which would only receive 1.4 bn forint against 2
bn granted last year.
On the other hand, 500 university teachers in Romania teaching Hungarian
language would receive monthly sums of 10.000 forint (about ROL1.5 mn)
from the Government of Hungary, also stated Marko Bela, who showed this
is a project initiated by UDMR and meant "to support the university
teachers who teach Magyar language in the countries neighboring
Hungary".

LIPPOVAN RUSSIANS CHOOSES NEW LEADER

BOTOSANI � Within the 7th National Conference of the Community of
Lippovan Russians in Romania (CRLR), which took place at the end of last
week, the representatives of the 20 county communities chose the
president and the members of CRLR�s National Council and enacted the new
statute of the community.
Deputy of Lippovan Russians ethnic Miron Ignat was elected CRLR�s
chairman and was designated to run for a new mandate at the
parliamentary elections in November. Former chairman Ecaterina Evdochim
is now a part of the National Council.
