NEW SURVEY SHOWS FRISIAN DECLINING WITH EVERY GENERATION

Children in Friesland speak much more Dutch than Frisian than ever
before. According to a survey among parents of young children by the
Frisian broadcaster Omrop Fryslan only 34 % of all children are nowadays
raised in Frisian, while 54 % are raised in Dutch. Nine percent of the
couples with children raise their children bilingually. Twenty years ago
42 % of all children were raised in Frisian, 48 % in Dutch and three
percent
bilingually.


PLANS TO ENCOURAGE MORE IMMIGRANTS TO WALES ATTACKED

The language pressure group Cymuned has attacked the Assembly Government
of Wales� plans to encourage more people to move to Wales to live
because this, it says, would threaten the Welsh language even further.
Its members are threatening to act against the Assembly Government and
to use international law to stop these plans.


LANGUAGE ACTIVISTS PERSUADE MULTINATIONAL COMPANY TO USE THE WELSH
LANGUAGE

The international company Burger King has agreed to use the Welsh
language in one of its restaurants as a pilot scheme which it is hoped
will eventually lead to the language being used in all its restaurants
in Wales. This came about after pressure from members of Cymdeithas yr
Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society). From now on all the menus
and signage at the Burger King in the mid-Wales town of Aberystwyth will
be bilingual.


SORBIANS URGED TO SAVE MONEY

The Sorbian minority in Eastern Germany faces a possible loss of 10
percent of it�s federal support in next year's budget. However, if the
Sorbian organisations carry through a number of serious administrational
reforms according to suggestions by the Federal German Administration
Office, further support will be forthcoming.
