ANDORRA PRESENTS CATALAN WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACCESS EU LANGUAGE
FUNDING

According to a Catalan government (Patronat Catal� pro Europa)
publication (dated 29th October) the European Council of Ministers,
representing the member states, have signed an Agreement with
Catalan-speaking Andorra which may open the gateway for Catalan language
projects to benefit from EU language programmes such as Socrates and
Leonardo. These programmes, however, continue to be reserved for
'official' member-state languages only. Non-official lesser-used
languages are still not able to access funds from EU language
programmes. 

DECLARATION PUBLISHED ON THE RIGHTS OF THE WELSH HEARTLANDS

At the end of October, the language pressure group Cymuned published a
Declaration of 'y Fro Gymraeg' (the Welsh-speaking heartland). The
Declaration says that the survival of y Fro Gymraeg is indispensable to
the survival and development of the Welsh language in the rest of Wales
and as a national language, and to the survival of Wales as a nation.

By Toutatis! Asterix and his indomitable Gaulish crew have gone
multilingual. A new series of Asterix books in Breton, Occitan,
Alsacien, Corsican, Gallo and Picard have just been released featuring
Asterix and his friend Obelix engaging in lesser-used language lessons
in a new series entitled 'school, the return'. 

CATALAN MEP BERNAT JOAN CALLS FOR MINORITISED LANGUAGE FUNDING

Last Wednesday in Strasbourg at the European Parliament Catalan MEP
Bernat Joan called for the necessary funding for the promotion of
minoritised languages in Europe and for the recommendations in last
year�s Ebner report to be implemented.

Probably no one has ever asked or has even bothered asking him, or
herself, where the Eurovision song contest got its name from. Be that as
it may, at Liet Ynternasjonaal ("Song International") about 1000 people
enjoyed a superb alternative song competition in Ljouwert/ Leeuwarden in
Friesland on Friday 22nd October, a contest that properly deserves the
name 'Euro-vision'.
