Presentation of the Europa Diversa Network

We are delighted to be able to inform you of the presentation of the
book Immigracio i Questio Nacional. Minories Subestatals i Immigracio a
Europa based on the proceedings of the international symposium on
"European Sub-State Minorities and Inmigration: Confluent
Realities"(Barcelona 17th-18th January 2003).

The event is organized by the Europa Diversa Network as part of the
activities prior to the World Congress on Human Movements and
Immigration within the Forum Barcelona 2004. The agenda is as follows:

- Presentation of the event in the context of the World Congress: Gemma
Aubarell (Institut Europeu de la Mediterrania)
- Presentation of the book: Jordi Sanchez (Fundacio Jaume Bofill)
- Presentation of the Europa Diversa Network. Activities and objectives
for the year 2004-2005: Miquel Strubell (Universitat Oberta de
Catalunya).
- Round table discussion of issues raised in the book. Experts such as
Joan Subirats (political scientist, UAB), and Ferran Requejo (political
scientist, UPF) will also participate in the discussion.

The meeting will take place on the 6th of July at 7pm at the
headquarters of the Institut Europeu de la Mediterrania (Carrer de
Girona, 20, Barcelona).

For those of you who are not yet familiar with the network, Europa
Diversa is a project which aims to highlight the importance of cultural
diversity in the construction of the new Europe. It is promoted by six
Catalan institutions: the Open University of Catalonia, the Jaume Bofill
Foundation, the European Institute of the Mediterranean, the UNESCO
Centre of Catalonia, Intercultura, Intercultura, Centre for
Intercultural Dialogue of Catalonia and the "Escarre"International
Centre for Ethnic Minorities and Nations. 

The valuable and unceasing cooperation of the Patronat Catala Pro
Europa, since the very beginnings of the group, is worth a special
mention. 
       

On-going projects    
 
Here are the new activities and projects that are currently taking
place, organised by the Europa Diversa network. We would also like to
remind you that anyone wishing to take part in the network can do so by
filling in a form which you will find at the end of the document.

Europa Diversa takes part in the Congress on Migrations, with the
session "Migrations, pluralism and cultural identity" organised by the
Instiut Europeu de la Mediterrania within the Forum Barcelona 2004

The Europa Diversa network is taking part in the Congress on Migrations
organised by the European Institute of the Mediterranean within the
setting of the Forum Barcelona 2004, with the session on "Migrations,
pluralism and cultural identity". Among other themes, the aim is to look
at the confluence among migration and national reality. The idea is to
create a participative session among experts and delegates. The session
will take place on the 5th of September.

The UOC will start the course "Governing European Cultural Diversity"

In September 2004, the Open University of Catalonia will start a course
on �Governing European Cultural Diversity�. The aim of the course is to
examine governance of cultural diversity in Europe and to consider the
kinds of challenges being discussed both by state institutions and
within the society itself. The course will be taught in English, and
there will also be a summer course which will focus on the links between
cultural diversity and youth cultures in Europe. The Europa Diversa
Network intends to provide a selection of recommended reading material
on the subject on its web site.


Creation of a virtual community on minority languages

The ADUM project � which in Friulian, a language spoken in north-eastern
Italy, means "together" � aims to offer people and organisations
throughout Europe that work for the so-called "minority" languages,
information on the European programmes that can be taken advantage of to
(co)fund projects to promote these languages. 

Likewise, ADUM is to offer a virtual space to aid the development of
European proposals by bodies and representatives of the 60 linguistic
communities in Europe. 

The website, which is to be available in French, English and German,
will provide access to a database of possible European partners and
expert consultants. Likewise, it is to offer a guide on the design and
the preparation of European proposals and a series of case studies, so
that the research groups can get to know what kinds of problems they may
come across, and the solutions that others have found, when designing
proposals for European projects.

The project is coordinated by the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and
the UOC's partners in this project are the Research Centre on
Multilingualism (Katholieke Universiteit Brussel); the Centre for
European Research of Wales; Slovenia's Institut za Narodnostna
Vprasanja; the Centro Internazionale sul Plurilinguismo (Universita
degli Studi di Udine, Italy) and the independent consultant Donall
O'Riagain from Ireland

The 2004 PARLIAMENT OF THE WORLD'S RELIGIONS is organized by the Council
of Parliaments of the world's religions, in partnership with the Forum
Barcelona 2004 and in association with the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia

The fourth edition of the Parliament of the World�s Religions will take
place in Barcelona from the 7th to the 13th of July 2004. This is the
first time that this meeting is held in Europe and not in an
English-speaking community. It is conceived as a step forward towards
the projection of interreligious international movements.

The topic of the 2004 Parliament is Pathways to Peace: "The Wisdom of
Listening, the Power of Commitment". It will be a working week which
will involve workshops and plenary sessions. The celebration of the
Parliament hopes to increase interreligious sensitivity, offering an
experience and an interreligious school of dialogue and also hopes to
enable the strengthening and increasing of the dynamics and structures
serving this dialogue.

L�Institut Europeu de la Mediterrania participates in the IV Conference
on Immigration in Spain. Citizenship and Participation.

This IV Conference on Immigration in Spain will take place from the 10th
to the 13th of November 2004 in Girona, and is organised by the
University of Girona, the Foundation SER.GI, The Lawyers� Association of
Girona, the University Rovira i Virgili, the University of Barcelona,
The Centre of Demographic Studies, the University of Lleida, the
Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Pompeu Fabra University, the
Jaume Bofill Foundation, the Immigrant Association of Catalonia and the
Institut Europeu de la Mediterrania. The first edition took place in
2000 and the conference is held every year. Its aim is to analyze the
key aspects of immigration in Spain. This year�s edition wants to focus
on citizenship and participation.

How to take part in the Europa Diversa network    
 
Anyone, whether a person or an organisation, sharing to any extent our
concerns and aims can take part in the network, opting for one of three
basic levels of participation: 
- As users of the services of Europa Diversa: consulting information and
data being disseminated through our website,
http://www.europadiversa.org/eng/index.html, receiving - if they so wish
- issues of this electronic newsletter and perhaps taking part in some
of the virtual or on-site activities which Europa Diversa shall be
organising. 
- As collaborators of Europa Diversa: sending in information or data
they feel ought to be disseminated through the website or our
newsletter, helping to identify other people and organisations for
Europa Diversa to contact, or sending us suggestions, proposals or
critical remarks about the Network's activities. 
- As members of the Network: if they feel that their activity is in line
with the objectives of Europa Diversa and that, over and beyond the
contributions that collaborators may make, they can act as a node in the
network we are building - either in a particular territorial area, or as
a representative of a particular cultural community, or thanks to their
involvement in a particular specialist field.
