NEW ARTICLES ONLINE: MINORITY EDUCATION -- WHAT MAJORITIES HAVE TO LEARN
(3)
EUMAP.ORG is pleased to publish the following four new articles on
minority education:
The Right to Education and Minority Language, by Fernand de Varennes
"Minority language education is more of an asset than a liability when
understood and applied properly. It is not a right which is applicable
in every situation where one individual simply demands it. It is rather
a result that is consistent with the values of respect for diversity,
tolerance and accommodation - rather than rejection - of differences
which have become cornerstones of most democratic societies."

The Education of Roma Children: Inroads to Good Practice, the REI
Example, by Christina
McDonald
"Education is one of the most important vehicles by which the
integration of minorities into mainstream society can be promoted. In
the case of the Roma, it has special importance, since exclusion from
society causes social deprivation."

Education, Education, and More Education, by Lilla Farkas
"The conceptualisation of race and gender as separate and even unrelated
categories has perpetuated the marginalisation of Romani women in the
collection of statistical data. A multi-dimensional approach to the
collection of data is needed."
