CORNISH LANGUAGE STRATEGY AGREED ON, LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT OFFICER TO BE
APPOINTED

A Strategy to help develop the Cornish Language has finally been agreed
upon, following extensive consultation with Cornish language groups,
individual Cornish speakers, local councils and members of the public.
Part of the strategy will include the appointment of a Cornish language
development officer and the establishment of a Monitoring Committee.


III MERCATOR INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM REVEALS LATEST TRENDS IN MINORITY
LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Leading sociolinguists, minority language experts, activists,
researchers and students came to the Frisian town of Ljouwert, Fryslan
(Friesland) over the weekend to exchange and discuss the latest
developments, news, updates and projects in the field of European
minority language education. Mercator presented their pilot project
'DigiByb', a digital library for regional and minority languages.


CONTROVERSY ON BILINGUAL SIGNS IN CARINTHIA CONTINUES

Following Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schussel's decision to call a
�consensus conference� on additional bilingual signs, there have been
mixed reactions from politicians across the country.


ROMANIA: HUNGARIAN PARTY RMDSZ RE-ELECTED

The umbrella organisation of the ethnic Hungarians in Romania, the
Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ, UDMR), kept its
position in the Parliament at the elections held on November 28th. The
electoral programme of the RMDSZ called �Together for Autonomy� promised
cultural autonomy for all Hungarian speakers in four years and
territorial autonomy later. The turnout at the elections was of 65%, a
little bit higher than in 2000.


IRISH A STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING AN EU OFFICIAL LANGUAGE

The campaign to have Irish made an official and working language of the
EU took a step forward on Wednesday (25th), when ambassadors from the
various member states gave what was described as a �cautiously positive�
response to the Irish Government�s request to have the status of Irish
raised.


THE FIRST 'LANGUAGE NEST' IN VoROMAA, SOUTHERN ESTONIA

In order to teach children the Voro language, parents from the Haani
area have started to bring their children once a month to the first
pre-school "language nest" in Voromaa (a county in south-eastern
Estonia), reports
�UmaLeht�, a Voro langauge newspaper.
