Press Release

Romania's Rwandization and State's Institutions Impunity

About the racial events which took place in Craiova, Rroma Association
from Romania, by FORROM - Federation of Rroma Organizations, reminds
that this kind of manifestations are frequent enough in Romania,
beginning with the Pogrom against Rroma from Bucharest, 14-15 June 1990,
and the "Hadareni case", which is on trial at the European Court, coming
to this year's "Buhusi case". During these hundreds of cases, tens of
Rroma were lynched or shot, hundreds of houses were burned down, the
guilty ones being reprieved or left unpunished.

In spite of the fact that Rroma associations addressed responsible
institutions, in 1994, on the danger of establishing OLIT - Organizatia
de Lupta impotriva Tiganilor (Organization for Fighting against
Gypsies), we have never received any answer, fact which allowed this
anti-Rroma organization to develop itself and to legitimate its actions
by the bodyguards organizations united into this phantom racist
association "Fratia" (Brotherhood). Informed by us on the fact that, in
Craiova discos, Rroma access was forbidden and a silent civil war was
going on, both the Ombudsman and the Dolj Prefecture have never given an
answer, confirming, unfortunately, the lack of responsibility and the
impunity of state's institutions.

As in other Romanian society's fields, the absence of coherent public
policies threatens our country to fall down again into dark Middle Ages.
Romania was a sclavocratic country (until 1856) and the present racism
of domination shows the urgent need to elaborate programs of social
(re)-learning of tolerance, in the spirit democratic citizenship.

FORROM Federation protests against the way Romanian media relates about
the racial turmoil from Craiova, especially on how it refrains from
correctly and impartially defining the parts in conflict.

FORROM Federation invites the representatives of state's institutions,
especially the National Council for Combating Discrimination, to take
immediate action.

Next days, the Rroma associations will organize a round table where they
will present a report on the racial turmoil from Craiova.

President,

Vasile Ionescu
