NATIONAL SZEKLER COUNCIL RELEASES AUTONOMY PROJECT
COVASNA - The permanent commission of the recently established Szekler
National Council on 13 November published a Romanian-language version of
a draft law on the autonomy of the envisaged Szekler region, Radio Free
Europe reported. The commission said it did so in order to demonstrate
that the setting up of the autonomous region would not affect Romania's
territorial integrity and that Romanian legislation will be respected in
the region. The commission also said the draft is to be submitted for
approval of its members on 6 January. If approved, it would be forwarded
to the Romanian parliament as draft legislation. The envisaged
autonomous region would include the Covasna, Harghita, and Mures
counties in Transylvania.

UBB PROFESSORS REQUEST ESTABLISHMENT OF INDEPENDENT MAGYAR UNIVERSITIES
CLUJ-NAPOCA � The establishment of independent Magyar faculties in
Universitatea de Stiinte Babes-Bolyai - Science University Babes-Bolyai
(UBB), Cluj, would be opportune because the decisions on Magyar majors
could be exclusively made by Magyar education bodies and could make up a
separate budget, UBB pro-rector, Kasa Zoltan says. The University
professors on Wednesday November 12 had talks with rector Andrei Marga
about the possible setting up of these independent faculties. After the
debates, pro-rector Kasa Zoltan said: "By establishing these Magyar
faculties, it would be much easier to conceive the structure of Magyar
major subjects and the necessary professors". According to the projects
of the Magyar professors, out of the current faculties the Magyar
departments would make a separate part, which is to be established out
of social chairs, already organized in an association, as well as the
Faculty of nature sciences. However, the establishment of Magyar
faculties is stipulated even in the protocol signed by UDMR and PSD. On
Wednesday�s debates, Magyar pedagogues indicated that, in their opinion,
the current structure of UBB is not adequate mainly due to difficult
system faced in setting up an institution. (DIVERS)

ANOTHER ROMANIAN WAS GRANTED "THE RIGHTEOUS AMONG THE NATIONS" TITLE
BUCHAREST - Israel state and the Yad Vashem Institute - Heroes'
Remembrance Authority, through Embassy of Israel in Bucharest, on
November 12 granted the "The Righteous among the Nations" title to honor
Magdalena Stroe for risking her life to save Jews during the Holocaust,
as indicates the release. So far, 19,707 men and women have been
acknowledged worldwide as "The Righteous among the Nations ", of whom 49
from Romania, as indicates the statistics of Yad Vashem Institute.
Israel feels morally obliged to honor, on behalf of Jewish people, those
foreigners who saved Jews, despite the risks they faced. Magdalena Stroe
in 1944 saved her Jewish friend Hanna Kende. When Hungary was seized by
Germany, there followed the establishment of ghettos and Jews�
expulsion, in Cluj inclusively, where the two friends used to live.
Magdalena, though she had never found out about the existence of death
camps in Auschwitz knew that her friend is in danger and handed over her
own documents. Thus Hanna succeeded in running away to Budapest. It was
Hanna Kende who requested the Yad Vashem Institute to acknowledge
Magdalena Stroe as "The Righteous among the Nations ". (DIVERS)

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UNIVERSITY MAGYAR LANGUAGE TEACHING- PROFESSORS IN
ROMANIA
CLUJ-NAPOCA � The Hungarian state starting September next year will
grant 1,100 scholarships for University professors din Romania teaching
Magyar language, stated on Friday November 7 in Cluj, the Hungarian
minister of Youth and Sports, Gyurcsany Ferenc. The minister states that
the scholarships will be allocated 5,000 � 15,000 forint monthly and
will be granted to the University teachers depending on the fulfillment
of certain criteria. "The goal of this scholarship system is to support
those professors teaching Magyar language, so as not to seek for other
means of subventions elsewhere. It is extra amount added to their
salary", indicated Gyurcsany Ferenc. The official from Budapest said
that by granting these scholarships it is aimed at "backing the
education and academic activity in Magyar language". The scholarships
will not be granted based on ethnical criteria, thus even the Romanian
professors teaching Magyar language can access them. (DIVERS)
