Call for Intern � Evaluation Project, Central, Eastern and Southeast
Europe
Fall-Winter 2003-2004
Minority Rights Group International (MRG) is a non-governmental
organisation working to secure the rights of ethnic, religious and
linguistic minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide, and to promote
cooperation and understanding between communities.
MRG's activities are focused on international advocacy, training,
publishing and outreach and are guided by the needs expressed by our
worldwide network of minority and indigenous partner organisations.
Presently, MRG is engaged in a comprehensive evaluation of its
programmes conducted in Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe in the
last decade. The ultimate goal of this evaluation is to enhance the
impact of MRG's and its local partners' work in Central, Eastern and
Southeast Europe through the assessment of the relevant programmes'
efficiency and effectiveness, accountability and impact.
MRG Budapest Co-ordination Office is currently accepting applications
for an intern to assist in implementation of this evaluation project.
The intern works as part of a small team based at MRG's Budapest office.
The internship will include the following tasks: research, analysis of
survey results, interviewing, organisation of and participation in
regional meetings, and general administrative tasks. It is expected that
the intern will work a minimum of 15 hours per week for up to six
months, depending on the availability of the selected applicant. The
intern will begin work on October 1, 2003. The internship will include
the opportunity to participate in MRG's Advocacy and Rights Training to
be held in November 2003 in Budapest, and the intern will attend the
presentation of evaluation project deliverables to take place in London
in Spring 2004; there may be further opportunities to travel.
The position is unpaid, but the intern will have the opportunity to
develop skills useful in a range of jobs within the NGO sector, and
he/she will also receive valuable experience in the field of minority
rights. It is envisaged that the internship will be very rewarding for a
committed individual.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Educated to degree level
- Social research skills in both qualitative and quantitative
methodologies
Desirable
- Good knowledge of the region including recent economic, political and
social developments gained through work experience,travel in the region
or study
- Knowledge of basic human rights law and international mechanisms
- Knowledge of evaluation methods gained through training or experience
Abilities and Skills
Essential:
- Good communication skills, including good written and spoken English
- Good organisational/administrative skills
- Knowledge of Word for Windows, Excel and e-mail packages, and
fast/accurate typing
- Ability to use Internet as a research tool
- Ability to liaise with minority communities and international
organisations
- Confidentiality
Knowledge of Southeast European languages, in particular Bulgarian or
Macedonian, is strongly preferred.
Personality
- Commitment to the aims and the objectives of MRG International
- Demonstrable interest in international affairs, human and minority
rights and development issues
- An interest in the NGO sector
- Commitment to gender equity and ability to implement MRG's gender
policy
- Enthusiastic about working in a multicultural environment and
committed to equal opportunities
- Discretion

* Resume
* Cover letter explaining the applicant's qualifications and motivation
in applying for the internship, and his or her availability
* An English language writing sample (e.g. publication or piece of
academic work) no more than 5 pages in length
The deadline for applications August 25, 2003. Shortlisted applicants
will be notified by September 8, 2003 and will be expected to begin
working in Budapest by October 1, 2003.
MRG is unfortunately unable to provide compensation for its interns.
