Call for papers: "Ethnic and National Minorities in CEE"


This is to inform that The Scientific Society of Ethnologists (Kolo
Naukowe EtnologÑw) at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland
organises the ethnological conference on:
 
"Ethnic and National Minorities in Central and Eastern Europe."
 
On April 17-20, 2000 in Cracow (Poland).
 
Main goals of the conference:

1. To share experiences and exchange research results in the field of
ethnic and national minorities in Central and Eastern Europe.

2. To initiate new co-operation and maintain the already existing
contacts among students of Ethnology and related sciences from
different European universities.
 
Programme of the conference:

-  lecture sessions,
-  audio-visual presentations,
-  meetings with scientists focused on issues of minorities in Poland.
 
Format:
A conference: four days of lectures and presentations (including a
special programme).
 
Lectures and discussions:
Every lecture should take 20 minutes. Time for questions to lecturer
is planned after every speech. After all lectures of the defined
topical group there is a discussion (about half an hour). At the end
of the conference there is a final discussion planned (it shall
consist of motions, conclusions, remarks, ideas for future common
initiatives etc.).
 
Main topic:
All lectures, presentations, meetings and discussions should refer to
the main topic of the conference. Additionally, every lecture should
fit to one of the four topical groups given below.
 
Study area:
The region of interest is Central and Eastern Europe meaning all
European post-communist countries.
 
Topical groups:
All lectures will be devided into four different topical groups:
1. Multiethnic regions and interethnic relationships: conflicts or
good neighbourhood?,
2. Different ways of sustaining and manifesting ethnic identity of a
minority (ethnic mythology, images, stereotypes, symbols, tradition,
rituals, customs etc.)
3. Ethnic and national minorities in a situation of change - the fall
of communism and its influence on consciousness of members of
minorities.
4. Assimilation process of ethnic minorities and its symptoms in the
spheres of language, culture and religion.
Every participant is to suggest in the application form which topical
group his/her speech should be included in.
 
Timing of lecture and presentation:
Lectures should take maximum 20 minutes. Audio-visual presentations
may take longer (suggestions and proposals connected with this
question are welcome).
 
Publication:
A follow-up publication including all the presentations of the
conference shall be edited.
 
Participants:
About 35 participants are expected to take part in the conference.
 
Costs:
The participation, accommodation and catering costs of the students
(both MA and PhD students) shall be covered by the organisers. There
is a possibility of covering travel expenses of participants from such
countries as Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Belarus and some others on
the basis of the most economical form of travel (please, contact us
for details). The rest of participants will be encouraged to find
sposnorship for their transportation costs (students of Ethnology from
the universities of Szeged, Praha, Bratislava and Zagreb may make an
attempt to apply to CEEPUS Programme).
 
Participant Requirements:
1. Participants are to be M.A. or Ph.D. students of Ethnology (or
other related science ex. History, Social Studies, European Studies
etc.);
2. Participants are to be able to speak fluent English (all lectures
and discussions are to be held in English).
3. Participants are expected to present their research results during
lecture sessions (and eventually in the audio-visual presentation) and
to take active part in discussions.
4. All the presentations have to be submitted in a written
(electronic) form for the publication purposes. They should not exceed
of 3-4 pages each. All the additional materials that can be used both
in lecture sessions and in the audio-visual presentation, such as
photos, slides, video-films, audio-recordings etc. are welcome.
 
Selection Procedure:
- The selection of participants who deliver their application forms by
the deadline of December 20, 1999, shall be made at a meeting of
Organising Committee in Cracow at the end of January 2000.
- The list of 35 participants (as well as a reserve list) shall be
established.
- All co-organisers of the conference from foreign universities shall
receive the list and express their approval.
- All participants selected will be informed and an information pack
shall be forwarded to them by the end of February 2000. A reply slip
should be filled in and sent back.
- In the case of drop-outs, the reserve list will be used to fill the
places.
- Students from Cracow who apply and are considered good applicatns
will be invited as day guests. The number of day guests will depend on
spare places in a conference room.
 
Selection Criteria:
- The quality of the lecture prepared and its conformability to the
theme of the conference (3-4 pages);
- Submission of a summary of research (or other) work undertaken in
considered area (special attention will be paid to direct field
research experience);
- Personal motivations for participation;
- Experience of working on relevant conference issues;
- Cultural and religious diversity and geographical balance;
 
Application deadline: December 20, 1999.
