Minority Course 2000 for young Europeans active in NGOs
Dear Sir/Ms
With this we invite all young, active NGO-members/students interested
in minority issues to take part in the following international meeting
of young Europeans to be held in Denmark from July 2nd to July 29th
2000. We hope you will distribute this information within the
networks, that you relate to.
The Minority Course 2000 is an international youth meeting aimed at
enhancing general understanding between young Europeans representing
minority and majority population-groups and cultures. 190 young
Europeans representing up to 50 different national and cultural
identities have since 1997 taken part in Minority Courses at
H=F6jskolen =D6sters=F6en, the organiser of the event, and are now
familiar with the "Minority Course experience" of living closely
together for 4-weeks, exchanging information about minorities and
human rights in various regions of Europe and debating the future of
European democracy.
The event will consist of among other things the following items:
Lectures and workshops examining different aspects of the European
minority question such as international documents on minority
protection, national identity and globalisation, the concept of
minorities, minorities and European security and visions for the
future of European democracy.
Minorities within a local, national and European media landscape will
be particularly addressed as well as in relation to new information
and communication technology.
In order to enhance the participants understanding of the broad
relevance of the European minority question, one week excursions to
other regions of Europe are planned as part of the Minority Course.
Most likely to Transylvania and Westfrisia.
The Minority Course 2000 will end with a conference, where present and
former participants of the Minority Courses will meet (also a kind of
reunion), discuss the "Minority Course experience" and present their
experiences to representatives of the European Commission, the Danish
Ministry of Education, the European Parliament and other
organisations.
The Minority Course 2000 is not an academic course. The aim is just as
much enhancing the personal understanding among the participants as is
the exchange of knowledge. This means, that the Minority Course is
also a social event, where close personal contacts will be made, and
which can serve as the basis of a future network among the
participants and their NGOs.
Practical information:
Young Europeans between the age of 18 and 25 are invited.
An application-form should be send to H=F6jskolen =D6sters=F6en before
March 3rd for East European applicants and April 7th for West European
applicants. To participate English must be understood and spoken. This
is an absolute necessity.
The application form can be obtained from the project co-ordinator
Jesper Nielsen at [email protected] or it can be downloaded from the
project's website Peoplesite at http://www.people.hojoster.dk
There is a participation fee of 135 EURO. This includes travels to and
from Denmark, board and lodging for 4-weeks, a one-week excursion to
another region of Europe, the programme and social events.
The final and detailed programme of the Minority Course 2000 will not
be available for some time. However a provisional programme can
obtained from the project co-ordinator.
Additional information about the event is available at Peoplesite,
where the programme will be continuously updated. Information about
the 1997-1999 Minority Courses are also available here as well as
debate forums, NGO profiles, an article-database and a chatpage, and
we invite you to contribute to the life of this web-community.
If you have further questions you are very welcome to contact the
project co-ordinator Jesper Nielsen:
Email: [email protected],
telephone: +45 74 62 47 00,
fax: +45 74 62 47 01.
Best wishes
Jesper Nielsen, project co-ordinator
