Re: Data on Identity in Eastern Europe

Dear Scott D. Orr,

In response to your question, I can mention some bibliographical
references and internet sources that may be of assistance to you.

With regards to using one of the Baltic states as your case, perhaps
Estonia would be a good choice. Here are some materials available in
the ECMI Library:

I can especially recommend the new book by Airat R. Aklaev, from the
Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Ethnology.

Airat R. Aklaev. Democratization and Ethnic Peace. Patterns of
ethnopolitical crisis management in post-Soviet settings. Ashgate:
Aldershot and Brookfield USA, 1999.

Here there are chapters on "Democratic Peace: Considering its Ethnic
Dimension," and "Democracy and Multiethnicity: Conditions of
Democratic Ethnic Peace." There are also case studies here on Estonia,
Lithuania, Moldova, and the Russian Federation.

Estonia's Non-Citizens: A Survey of Attitudes to Migration and
Integration. Budapest: Migration Information Programme, International
Organization for Migration, 1997.

Statistics on minorities in Estonia are available at: Legal
Information Centre for Human Rights
http://www.lichr.ee

Estonian Human Development Report 1998. Tallinn: UNDP-Estonia, 1998.
This includes a chapter on "Civic Society, Statehood and Legal
Culture," and "Integrating Into Europe and the World."

Estonia and Russia, Estonians and Russians: A Dialogue. Tallinn: The
Olof Palme International Center, The Institute of International and
Social Studies, and the Center for the Study of Mind and Human
Interaction, University of Virginia, 1998.

Integrating Non-Estonians into Estonian Society: Setting the Course.
Tallinn: UNDP Estonia, 1997.

With regards to regional identity in the Czech Republic, particularly
Moravian identity I recommend the following, at least as a starting
point:

Janusz Bugajski. Ethnic Politics in Eastern Europe. A guide to
Nationality Policies, Organizations, and Parties. With a new
postscript. Armonk and London: M.E. Sharpe, 1995. Here there is a
separate chapter on the Czech Republic, with a section on Moravian and
Silesian Regionalists. Also here is a chapter on Poland.

With regards to Silesia, I can recommend the following books as a
starting point:

Marek S. Szczepanski, (ed.) Ethnic minorities & majority. Sociological
Studies of Ethnic Relations in Poland. Katowice: University of Silesia
Press, 1997.

Here are the following chapters. "Upper Silesia and Masuria in Search
of Identity," "Ethnic Identity, Tolerance, Civil Society:
Identification Options of Contemporary Inhabitants of Upper Silesia,"
>From Research Experience on Social Integration of Silesian Native
Population after 1945", "Between the Ethnic Minority and Majority: The
Role of Social Institutions in Creating the Interethnic Relations in
Opole Silesia."

Additional books available from the University of Silesia Press, but
not in the ECMI Library include:

Dilemmas of Regionalism and the Region on Dilemmas: The Case of Upper
Silesia. ed. by Marek S. Szcepanski. (publishing date unknown)

Regional Identity-Regional Consciousness: The Upper Silesian
Experience. ed. by Kazimiera Wodz.

The details on ordering books from the University of Silesia Press are
as follows.

The University of Silesia Press Book Shop, Bankowa Street 12, 40-007
Katowice, Tel. (351) 582-441

I can not be sure that this telephone number is still valid. I hope
these references have been helpful.

Sincerely,

William McKinney
