New book: The Road to War in Serbia: Trauma and Catharsis
The Road to War in Serbia: Trauma and Catharsis
edited by Nebojsa Popov
CEU Press, 1999
This remarkable book differs from all previous books written on the
Balkan conflict - it is the first to be written without Western
contributions or ideologies. Written and edited entirely by Yugoslav
citizens who are experts in the field and who experienced the
conflicts from within, the book:
Explores the very roots of the conflict
Identifies specific catalysts that ignited the war
Assesses the conflict from varying social angles
The editor Nebojsa Popov, is one of the most prominent opposition
figures in Yugoslavia and has been under the media spotlight for many
years. One of the famous 'Belgrade 8', they came under the scrutiny of
President Tito in 1968 resulting in an overnight legislation which
forced them out of their university positions.
Nebojsa Popov was an original member of Praxis and co-founder of the
Civic Alliance of Serbia Party in 1991. He has been a prominent figure
in organizing and leading demonstrations for a decade including the
famous protests in Belgrade during 1996/97.
