Freedom of expression is threatened in many countries, where media
face censorship, arrest, torture, and murder. IFEX turns the spotlight
on human rights violations through its Action Alert Network. Whenever
a violation occurs, protest information is circulated around the world
to organisations via e-mail. These groups, in turn, voice their
protests to governments. Such concerted campaigns can be instrumental
in securing the release of those imprisoned for their opinions or for
the lifting of restrictive laws. IFEX issues approximately 50 Action
Alerts each week, covering cases worldwide. IFEX also publishes a
weekly newsletter, the IFEX "Communique", which highlights events and
developments in the international freedom of expression community.
