Throughout its millennial history, Trans-Carpathia has known many
names and rulers. Under the Hungarians, it was Kárpátalja. In
Masaryk's Czechoslovakia it was referred to as Podkarpatská Rus,
Rusínsko, or Ruthenia. For several hours in 1939, it was the
independent Republic of Carpatho-Ukraine. The Soviets and now the
Ukrainians call it Zakarpatt'ja, or Trans-Carpathia. Its chief
inhabitants, the Rusyns (who themselves are called by many names)
traditionally refer to it as Pidkarpatska Rus', or Sub-Carpathian
Rus...
