ETHNIC UYGHURS OF KAZAKHSTAN STAGED DEMONSTRATION OF PROTEST IN FRONT
OF UZBEK EMBASSY IN KAZAKHSTAN.
Yesterday, November 4, dozens of ethnic Uyghurs staged a picket in
front of the building of Uzbek Embassy in Kazakhstan demanding Islam
Karimov - the Uzbek President to focus on situation around Uyghurs,
particularly on the destiny of Mrs. Rabia Qadir, a well known Uyghur
human rights activist, during the summit to be held between Uzbek
President Karimov and his Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin in the near
future.
Rabia Qadir was arrested by the Chinese authorities earlier this year
and is kept in one of the Chinese jails currently. Uyghurs of Eastern
Turkistan, the territory also called by Chinese as Xin Jiang - New
Frontier, has been oppressed by the Chinese authorities in the last
several years due to some separatist activities noticed in the area
after the collapse of the neighboring Soviet Union in 1991. Leaders
of ethnic Uyghurs living in Kazakhstan say that hundreds of young
Uyghurs have been arrested, put to jails or shot by Chinese
authorities in the last several years.
Republic of Eastern Turkistan used to be independent country for a
short term in the mid-40s. The main population of the area are Uyghurs
- a Muslim Turkic nation having common historic and ethnic roots with
Central Asian nations, such as Kazakhs Kyrgyzs, Uzbeks, Tatars and
Turkmens. About 1 and half million of ethnic Kazakhs are living in
Xin Jiang currently. Meanwhile number of ethnic Uyghurs living in
Kazakhstan is about 300 thousand.

TURKISTAN-Net (TN) is an electronic distribution list and newsletter
whose purpose is to report on the "Land of the Turks". By the use of
the word "Turkistan" we mean, in general, lands where Turk peoples
live, without any geographical restriction and without specific
reference to Central Asia or political boundaries. TN reports on all
the the Turk peoples from Kyrgyz, Kazaks, Uzbeks, Uygurs to Anatolian
and Thracian Turks, but also about much less known Turks like the
Gagauz, Tuvans or Yakuts. TN was established on 9 May 1997 as an
initiative of S.O.T.A. Book reviews, commentaries, articles, and
letters from the readers can also be published in TN.
