3. The Georgian Wienerwald Tales

It would be delusive to hope for a possible interference of
international armed forces in settling the Abkhazian conflict, the
newspaper argues. Georgia, nevertheless, seems still anxious about
such a possibility. Moldova and Azerbaijan are in a similar situation.
That is why all the three decided to join their efforts at the October
23 enlarged session of the OSCE standing council. However, Azerbaijan
withdrew its issue, while the speech of a Georgian deputy foreign
minister was so vague as to suggest that Georgia remains fearful of
Russia; it should state more clearly what he wants the international
community to do.

1. Abkhaz Gunmen Took Hostage 30 Georgians

Abkhaz gunmen have taken hostage 30 residents of the village of
Gagida, Gali district. According to some sources, the incident
occurred after the gunmen were fired on and one of them was killed.
The hostages, most of them being women, children and elders, are kept
at the gunmen's headquarters in one of the houses of Gagida.

4. Aslan Abashidze May Know Nothing about Ongoing Repression in Batumi

The chief of the Adjarian criminal police, charged with keeping drugs,
was arrested on October 19. Several other people, quite prominent
figures in Batumi, were on the arrest list of the Adjarian security
service and are detained now. The newspaper finds it suspectful that
they all were arrested right on the eve of the local elections. The
Batumi officials, being rather aggressive towards the Resonance
newspaper, refused to comment on the incident. One of them even
threatened to dismiss everyone who will provide the newspaper with
information.
