Svans Are Leaving Abkhazian Svaneti
 
After the Chechen militants were pushed to the north-east corner of
the Kodori Gorge (the only part of Abkhazia nominally controlled by
the Georgian government), the exodus of its inhabitants, Svans, which
started in September, is going on: it seems that the Chechens will
have to winter there, and the Svans are afraid that Russians may bomb
the gorge. Every second of some 3,000 people that had lived in the
gorge before September 2001, has left.
