CFP: From Violence to Politics
2001 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE ETHNIC STUDIES NETWORK
FROM VIOLENCE TO POLITICS
27-30 June 2001
Aberfoyle House, Derry/Londonderry, NORTHERN IRELAND
Submission Deadline: I February 2001
The fifth international conference of the Ethnic Studies Network will
once again be held at the headquarters of INCORE in Aberfoyle House in
Derry/Londonderry, from 27-30 June 2001. This will provide an
excellent opportunity to meet fellow members of the Network as well as
many academics and practitioners from Northern Ireland, and to
exchange ideas with them.
The theme of the Network's conference will be FROM VIOLENCE TO
POLITICS and we will be seeking to combine different national
experiences and approaches around common issues. This topic is one
which has been raised in earlier conferences and one which is, of
course, of interest to us all. Both the parallels between regions in
their experiences and the differences provide a valuable opportunity
for cross-regional learning.
Presentations on regions at varying stages in the peace process (or
not yet formally embarked on any peace process) are welcome and as
ever we are particularly pleased to welcome contributions from a range
of academic disciplines. Workshops and presentations from trainers,
policy-makers and practitioners are also encouraged. We also encourage
you to contact colleagues from other countries, and to suggest themes
and organise panels of contributors. Do not confine your arrangements
to members of the Network. Our organisation aims to encourage
cross-national discussion, not to confine it.
The conference will coincide with, and incorporate, the final meeting
of INCORE's Progressing Towards Settlement project led by Professor
John Darby and Dr. Roger MacGinty and it is hoped that many of their
26 collaborators on the project will be able to join us.
SUBMISSIONS
You are invited to submit a paper, symposium, debate or exhibit. The
meeting will be organised around content areas identified below and we
plan to feature invited talks and showcase poster sessions designed to
share ideas and research findings. Innovative sessions, symposia and
workshops are encouraged as are research and theory targeted towards
practitioners.
Papers/Posters. The maximum length for papers is 25 pages, including
title page, abstract (on a separate page), references, tables and
figures. Shorter papers will also be acceptable. Papers that do not
fit neatly with others, or that require more time and serious,
face-to-face discussion will be scheduled in a showcase poster
session. The paper or poster should not have been presented at a past
meeting.
Symposia/Debates: Symposia are focused sessions in which participants
present their views on a common issue. Debates ordinarily include a
moderator and two teams of one or two speakers each. Persons
submitting symposium or workshop proposals must indicate that they
have commitments from all participants that they will register for and
attend the meeting.
Exhibits: a special demonstration or event that illustrates innovative
applications in negotiation and social conflict, eg computer software.
To indicate possible approaches to the conference theme, here is a
list of sessions which has already been suggested:
- Preparing for Peace
- Peace Negotiations
- Approaches to Mediation/ Negotiation techniques
- The Role of Violence during Peace Processes
- Peace Accords
- Constitutional Development and Reform
- Post-settlement Peace-building
- The Aftermath of Conflict/ Post-war Reconstruction
- The Role of Women in Peace Processes
- Policy preparations for peace/ Policy-making and Ethnic Identity
- Progressing Towards Settlement - International Peace Processes
- The Relationship between Economic Factors and the Resolution of
Ethnic Conflict/ Peace Dividends
- The Role of Cultural Traditions in Reaching an Accommodation
The conference will also, of course, discuss other topics suggested by
members, there will be an invited keynote presentation, and a plenary
session.
All submissions will be evaluated by the ESN review team. Only those
submitting proposals will be notified of the acceptance or rejection
of the submission and information on scheduling. All submissions
should include a Submission Cover sheet which is attached to this call
for papers (or can be obtained from Lyn Moffett or Raisin O'Hagan).
In addition to the written material, each submitter should include a
computer diskette containing most of the information requested on the
Submission Cover Sheet (this will be used for preparing the Conference
Programme as well as the Proceedings). Abstracts may be sent by
electronic mail (to: [email protected]), but please also send a
hard copy by post. The elements required are: title, names and
affiliations of authors, and the 200 word abstract (see also attached
Submission Cover Sheet). Abstracts should be sent to reach the
Conference Coordinator by I February 2001, and the review team will
respond by the end of March. A draft version of the programme will be
sent to participants by the end of May.
