Archaeologists, ethnographers to gather in Baku
An international science conference, "Archaeology and Ethnography of
the Caucasus", is expected to start in Baku Wednesday, the Academy of
Sciences told Assa-Irada Tuesday. The conference, to be attended by

Refugees to study family planning
A 90-people-strong group of voluntarily selected women-refugees will
undergo a 6-day training session on family planning starting September
25. It will be held within the new humanitarian assistance program and
be called "Improving the access to family planning and reproductive
health services".
The program is being held by US humanitarian organization "Pathfinder
International", scheduled to last 2.5 years and be financed by the
USAID. It is aimed at improving the awareness and access to family
planning services for refugees and IDPs residing in Baku, Sumgayit and
Absheron district. The program will cover 90,000 people. "Pathfinder
international" will also publish 100,000 copies of a brochure on
family planning and reproductive health and distribute it free of

"Political prisoners come under pressure", say human right groups
Seriously perturbed with rampant human right violation in prison,
human right activists intend to appeal to the COE Human Rights
Commission and demand the establishment of an international commission
to investigate the situation, a human rights activist Saida Gojamanli
told a news conference Friday.
According to her, pressure on political prisoners, especially those
who took party in the national-liberation movement and former interior
troops, has intensified, as they are being placed in solitary
confinement under various pretexts.
"All this is done by the head of the department for execution of court
rules under the Ministry of Justice Aydin Gasimov. Repeated appeals by
human right activists to the Ministry have given no fruit", she said.
S. Gojamanli also said that would appeal to the COE committee due to
the indifference displayed by local authorities.
US Congress Research Center interested in IDPs
Representatives of the US Congress Research Center led by Kenneth
Katsman, currently in Baku, have expressed a wish to see the living
conditions of IDPs on the ground. They have voiced the wish a meeting
with vice-premier, chairman of the state committee for refugees Ali
Hasanov, who briefed the guests on the history of the
Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict. He spoke of the hard living conditions
of about one million refugees and IDPs who lost shelter due to
Armenian aggression and emphasised that the unfair Section 907 had
emerged because of the shortage of objective information.
