Program Objectives
The Curriculum Resource Center (CRC) is the Central European
University's outreach program for social science teaching in Central
and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. With an emphasis on
curriculum development, teaching and dissemination of academic
resources to higher educational institutions in the region, the CRC
facilitates academic exchange, course development and curriculum
reform activities.

The CRC was initiated to help overcome the material limitations to
course development and curriculum reform in the region. Through the
Center and its Curriculum Development Program, the CEU library
collections, computing resources, physical facilities and teaching
faculty become a shared resource available to scholars from the
region.

CRC activities also encourage contact and exchange between academics
with common disciplinary interests. CRC curriculum collections (both
in hard copy at the CEU library and in online format) provide for
greater distribution of information about worldwide and regional
academic developments, whilst CRC visiting sessions create a forum for
discussions on disciplinary development.

Program Description
Curriculum Development Program Visits
During each academic year, approximately 300 academics from the region
are able to attend CRC sessions. These professors and lecturers will
be from the discipline areas that we teach at CEU - matching our
professorial expertise with the needs of the region. Visits are
focused around the development of new course syllabi which visitors
will then teach at their home institutions. Sessions focus on a wide
range of issues vital to specific countries or areas of the region and
to specialists working at the innovative edge of their disciplines.
Each session offers an intensive week-long period for syllabi review,
library work and meetings with CEU professors, department/program
heads and students. Special seminars, workshops and lectures are often
scheduled by departments for our visitors, and we also offer the
opportunity of attending CEU teaching sessions in the relevant
discipline.

Acceptance Criteria
Applicants should come prepared with a course plan they would like to
update, revise or develop during their CRC visit. Preference will be
given to applicants whose course development plan can clearly benefit
from CEU faculty and library resources. Participants must have
sufficient English language abilities to participate in group
discussions and make use of library materials. Following the session,
all visitors must submit their finished course to the CRC.

CRC Resource Collection Development
The CRC maintains a wide range of resources related to course and
curriculum development. The main focus of the collection is course
syllabi and curriculum outlines in the areas of CEU specialization.
These syllabi can be divided into five groupings:
. Syllabi from a range of Western Universities
. Syllabi from Universities of the region
. Syllabi developed by CRC alumni after their visit to CEU
. CEU Course Outlines past and present
. Special Collections from country specific discipline Associations
(e.g. the American Political Science Association) and International
Discipline Organizations (encompassing core courses from both West and
East)

In addition, the CRC provides access to a wider range of resources
that can aid curriculum development:
. Reading Packets from CEU Courses past and present
. Catalogues, educational plans and course syllabi from East-Central
Europe and the former Soviet Union
. A range of Western University catalogues and program descriptions
with selections extracted and arranged by discipline
. Other materials and resources related to course development and the
support of Higher Education in general.

All CRC resource materials, syllabi, reading packets and other parts
of the collection are available in the CEU Library. Freelancers are
encouraged to make use of these facilities.

World Wide Web and Electronic Distribution
The CRC Home Page provides access to further information about the
CRC, a regularly updated Schedule of Visits with deadlines, the CRC
Application Form, a growing database of curricula, and links to the
Home Pages of universities and discipline associations worldwide which
may be of interest to both our colleagues in the East and West. In the
future, the CRC is also hoping to provide these Internet Services in a
number of regional languages for those wishing to access our
facilities but without the necessary English language ability. The CRC
Home Page can be visited through the CEU World Wide Web site at
http://www.ceu.hu/crc/. Syllabi can be requested on floppy disk as
Microsoft Word or ASCII files. The Center is also working on other
projects to facilitate and encourage the use of electronic media in
the development of higher education in the region.

The Curriculum Resource Center is a unit of CEU under the ECHO
(External Programs) umbrella. It is funded by and was created in
co-operation with the Higher Education Support Program of the Open
Society Institute - Budapest.

Contact Information
Curriculum Development Program applications, visiting session
schedules and further information on the center's outreach activities
and resources may be obtained from the CRC office at the Central
European University or through local Soros Foundations.
