THE ISSUE OF RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE IN AKHALKALAKI TO BE CONSIDERED IN
AUTUMN
BAKU. 8 August. MPA: Withdrawal of the Russian military bases from the
territory of Georgia did not affect the general situation in
Akhalkalaki (Samtskhe-Javakhetia). As Armenia's media report,
[predominantly ethnic] Armenian population of the region is against
the withdrawal, for the base provides jobs for local residents and
ensure 90% of social-economic needs of the population.
According to information from the "Javakh" union, there is no any
incidents in Akhalkalaki, for the local military base is not included
into the process of the Russian troops' withdrawal. Consideration of
the fate of the Russian military bases in Akhalkalaki and Batumi is
scheduled for late September or early October.
