1. FROM THE RUSSIAN EMBASSY

The Russian embassy in Tbilisi protests against the article "Russian
Fighters Bombed Georgia Yesterday" published in yesterday's issue of
the "Svobodnaya Gruzia" newspaper, claiming it to be a provocation
aimed to trigger anti-Russian hysteria. The embassy denies flatly that
the fighters that bombed the Zemo Omalo village on August 9 were
Russian.

2. YOUNG CITIZENS "BOMBED" THE RUSSIAN EMBASSY

In protest against the August 9 bombing of the village of Zemo Omalo
by Russian fighters several dozens of the Young Citizens of Georgia (a
youth section of the ruling party) joined by some people from Tbilisi
University hold a meeting outside the Russian embassy in Tbilisi and
threw paper planes at the building. Vyacheslav Tsurikov, the acting
ambassador of Russia to Georgia, informed the protesters that a
special Russian commission would investigate the incident.

4. ASLAN ABASHIDZE AND THE HEAD OF THE OSCE MISSION DISCUSSED THE
PROBLEM OF FAIR ELECTIONS

While on official visit to Batumi Jean Michel Lacombe, the head of the
OSCE mission in Georgia, met Aslan Abashidze, the Adjarian leader, on
August 11 to discuss the problem of OSCE monitors at the coming
parliamentary elections.

5. THE FIRST KURD NEWSPAPER IN GEORGIA

The first issue of a Kurdish-language newspaper, the monthly "Glavezh"
("Morning Star"), is out in Georgia
[in Soviet time, its predecessor was "Ria Taza". -- Ed.]. When stating
its programme, its publisher and editor Karam Ankos (orientalist and
Yezid theologian) lays stress on its apolitical character: it is to be
focused on Yezid religious teaching, Kurdish culture, folk traditions,
education, history, language, etc. Nowadays, there are c. 60 thousand
Yezidi Kurds in Georgia [according to a reference book of the UN HCR
-- 33 thousand. -- Ed.].

1. WHAT IS THE GOAL OF MANILOV'S VISIT TO GEORGIA

Alexander Manilov, deputy director of the Russian federal frontier
service, visited Georgia on August 12. According to official
information, his three-day visit, which includes trips to Adjaria and
Abkhazia, aims to co-ordinate the process of withdrawal of Russian
frontier troops from Georgia. Unofficial sources claim that he is
going to find out Georgia's position regarding Chechnya and Daghestan:
Russia is anxious to know whether Georgia will keep its "hesitant
neutrality".
"Dilis Gazeti" No. 184, August 13, p. 1

2. THE SHURA OF DAGHESTAN APPEALED TO THE GEORGIAN PRESIDENT

The Shura (Islam government) of Daghestan has appealed to the Georgian
president, calling upon him to keep Georgia out of the current
escalation of conflict in North Caucasus (the clash between Wahhabi
and the Russian
army). Mamuka Areshidze, the chairman of the parliamentary committee
for relations with the North Caucasian nations, says neither the
president nor the government of Georgia had ever set contacts with the
Wahhabi or would ever do.

4. THE STATEMENT OF THE AD HOC PARLIAMENTARY COMMISSION FOR THE
PROBLEM OF ABKHAZIA

On occasion of the 7th anniversary of the outset of the war in
Abkhazia (August 14) the commission declares that the separatist
regime, instigated by external reactionary forces, ignores the
peaceful initiatives of the Georgian government. The Russian
peacekeepers in the conflict zone shut their eyes to continual
violence against the local Georgian population. The illegal
presidential elections in Abkhazia scheduled for October 3 and
denounced by the UN are a rude challenge to international community.
"Svobodnaya Gruzia" No. 185-186, August 13, p. 1
