It is estimated that in the EU alone there are at least 40 m. citizens
whose language is one other than the main official language of the
member state of which they are citizens. There is at least one
autochtonous linguistic minority in every EU member state. With
enlargement, this number is set to increase dramatically. A number of
international legal instruments have been prepared to help accommodate
linguistic and cultural diversity - especially over the last two
decades.
How effective and how relevant are these?
How do they function?
Are they adequate for the future?
The aim of this conference is to review teh main international legal
instruments now in place, to look at some interesting case studies of
language legislation in operation and to consider what new measures
may be needed to ensure the linguistic rights of all European citizens
in the future and thus safeguard peace and harmony among peoples.
