2. ANOTHER SERVANT OF THE GOVERNMENT IN THE OMBUDSMAN'S GOWN?!
Assessing the activities of Ombudsman David Salaridze (he is going to
run the coming parliamentary elections and must relinquish the office
according to the law), the author says his every step was controlled
by the top authorities. Mrs Elena Tevdoradze, the chair of the
parliamentary penitentiary subcommittee, has the best rating in the
opinion polls conducted by NGOs. Neither her activities have ever
exceeded the limits put by the President and the ruling party though,
the article goes, but substantially contributed in improving their
image. So, in the author's opinion, her candidacy would be the most
acceptable for them. Among the other possible candidates, the author
singles out Mr Paata Zakareishvili, a member of the parliamentary
human rights committee. He is said to be politically unbiased and to
have a rich experience gained both in the committee and in Abkhazia
where he acted as a peacemaker during the armed conflict.

4. LIVIU BOTA'S CONCLUSION: BOTH PARTIES ARE UNDER ILLUSIONS
Tbilisi hopes that the July 31 session of the UN Security Council will
qualify the armed conflict in Abkhazia as genocide of Georgians.
Meanwhile at his press conference in New-York Liviu Bota, the
ambassador of the UN to Georgia, who has just completed his 4-year
mission in this country, says both parties, Abkhaz and Georgian, are
under illusions waiting for a solution from the UN. A solution cannot
be imposed by force: it can only be found through negotiations of the
parties concerned, he says.

1. THE ABKHAZ POLICE ARRESTED TWO GEORGIANS
Two Georgians - 72-year-old Pavle Todua and 68-year-old Avtandil
Markelia - were put to the preventive detention wards by the Abkhaz
police in Gali. The administration of the Zugdidi district (where the
number of IDPs exceeds that of locals nowadays) demanded to release
them, and the chief of the Gali police replied they were charged with
illegal keeping of weapons and might be released only if found not
guilty.

Elena Tevdoradze, the chair of the parliamentary penitentiary
subcommittee, replied the journalist, when he said that she was highly
