Dear Friends:

I am writing to introduce myself to you as the recently appointed NGO
Liaison for the World Conference Against Racism for the Office of the
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva. As you may
know, the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination,
Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (WCAR), which will take place in
South Africa from 31 August to 7 September 2001, will be one of the
most important conferences at the start of this new Millennium. The
OHCHR believes that the success of the conference will in no small
part be determined by the active engagement of civil society in the
Conference, in the NGO Forum that will parallel the World Conference,
and in the Preparatory process leading up to the WCAR.

In order to disseminate information as widely as possible about the
WCAR and the preparatory process, I have established this new ListServ
to keep you fully informed about developments. I will use it to send
out  information on a regular basis in English, French and Spanish.
While the information is targeted primarily at NGOs, I have included
others - academics, national institutions, individuals working with
government agencies or with inter-governmental organizations - who
have indicated that they want to be kept informed about the World
Conference. To maximize the outreach of this ListServ, I hope that you
will all use your own networks (electronic and non-electronic) to
further spread this information, including to grassroots groups which
do not have access to the Internet.
