Despite having dragged on for several years now, there seems to be no
solution in sight for Dreilinden this year either. The former border
crossing on the edge of Berlin is at the centre of a dispute every
Summer when Roma families on the move through Europe use it for short
stopovers. Up to 50 caravans can be connected to mains electricity and
water, their children can go to school, but the halting site is under
threat from an urban renewal project which the local council and the
Berlin city council cannot agree over. The local Zehlendorf council
plans to have the crossing planted with trees and turn the remaining
space over to developers: there is no place in this plan for a Roma
halting site even though the Dreilinden site was singled out for such
a purpose by the Berlin mayors office last year.
